CHAPTER ONE

1.0  INTRODUCTION

Recently, there has been a noticeable shift from teacher centered science classrooms to various student-centered learning environments (SCLE) promoting students engagement and active learning although the importance of active learning in mathematics education can hardly be over emphasized. The change in western world post secondary education is yet to come (Svinicki 2000).

One possible reason for this delay might be the lack of practical solutions in addressing the challengers of (SCLE) computer servers as advanced media and it acceptance in several areas of the school and society.

There is sample evidence that active learning plays a crucial role in mathematics. Moreover, research shows that student’s expectations have a direct impact on their achievement computer serves as reducing and removing student anxiety and uncertainly regarding the course policies, expectation, assignments, and requirement, it is also decreasing the time spent on organization issues in the classroom while increasing the time spent on student-student or student-instructor interaction continuously, updated online class schedule included all the necessary information. Computer as support student time management during the semester, via carefully structure deadlines posted from the beginning of the semester. It providing students with an opportunity to share their concern with the course mate and instructor, and get on going on their learning. Computer serve as online homework service to build student problem solving skills website provided a frame work for the students centered learning environment and help us gradually build course expectations, the real difference in the course was caused by using a HS. This online service was created at the mathematics department at the University of Texas at Austin it provides the instructors and students with a virtual [SCLE] perfect for creating an interactive classroom. The students can work on their assignments online, or if they prefer doing it in a more traditional way, students can download all the assignment and use computer only for submitting the answers and getting instantaneous feedback.

There is always a possibility to resubmit the answer. After the due date, they can download complete solutions to all the problems homework service [HS] does not require having computer in the classroom. In addition, it has a few useful features that change the nature of learning environment. Also personalized homework assignment, every student received conceptually identical questions with different numerical values, so they can not copy the right answer from their classmates, and students online access to their grades, to all the classroom statistics, information about all the course requirements, all the solutions and statistics of their previous homework assignment e.t.c. computer gives unique to discuss any science problem with classmates and the instructor around a clock via an Electronic discussion board [EDB].

In mathematics, the emphasis is on the use of computer connected instruments and processing data with the aid of specialized computer programs.

1.1  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

The research has shown the computer beings used has many ways of improving interaction with the students. It has the most impact on student performance which refers to their direct participation in school activities. Computer usage in the classroom coincidence with the introduction of the graphic user interface offered with the commodore 64 in 19, we began using computer for classroom demonstrations, teaching in mathematics course for the technical engineering students, students solves a problem by means intuitions and knowledge he gets from the physical system after several trails.

Computer experiment stimulate the practical carried out in the school laboratory i.e. because they are expensive, dangerous or difficult to assemble computer experiments which have the advantage of visualizing the mathematical process without the interference of the measuring instruction or environment and allow student to choose parameters freely.

1.2  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Good improvement of teaching and learning process in mathematics, the instructor should find the means of implementing science teachers practice and students leaning can be significantly enhanced by providing teaching materials that can embody research finding and insights the study will shed light on the need for appropriate uses of computer in the teaching of mathematics. It assumed that the study will help school in the use of computer programs to the development towards student’s performance. It will also give future development, towards student’s performance. It will also give future development, as an open project will continue to produce new materials and their usefulness to teaching and leaning processes of mathematics

1.3  PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

As    various researcher in the time past has been very concerned with the effect of computer usage on academic improvement of students in mathematics and its outcome, this research will also look into past work and make more

Finding about computer as improving measurement for the teaching of mathematics also check out its implication.

  • RESEARCH QUESTION
  1. What is the effect of computer on teaching and learning of mathematics?
  2. What level of computer operation is on teaching and learning of student in mathematics?
  3. What is the effect of current approaches in science especially mathematics.
  4. It there any correlation between using computer as instructional materials and the old method of teaching of mathematics in direct ways and improving of learning mathematics?
    • RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
  5. Computer level of understanding has no significant correlation with the improving learning of mathematics
  6. Computer level of operation has no significant correlation with improving student performance in mathematics.
  7. Current teaching approaches in mathematics have no significant correlation between improving learning of mathematics.
  8. There is no significant correlation between improving process in mathematics using computer as instructional system and student’s performance.

1.6  LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study will be limited to student of mathematics of faculty of education university of a case study of Ojo Local Government Area because, they would be able to answer question, if the implementation of computer will serve as a way of improving teaching and learning of mathematics also the students performance.
