ABSTRACT

The literature on religious crisis in Nigeria largely implicated socio-economic, political, and government deficit as the major causes of such crisis, this research however, departing from the underlying causes approach, undertake an analytical inquiry into the immediate and visible factors that bigger religious conflicts in the country. It also elevate the nation of state management of religious crisis in Nigeria and posits that government haphazard approach to these conflicts as well as the absence of a long time strategy for its management account for their persistence manifestation drawing from the findings made, recommendation on the appropriate approach to curbing religious crisis in the country are proffered.

INTRODUCTION

• BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The notion of religious suggests an attempt by man to work out a relationship between man and super-ordinary or super natural being. Thus, religious belief is promised on the assumption that human perception of things wimp and comprise require higher power to help them respond adequately and effective to the concerns.

Religious could serve, and has indeed serve as an instrument of social harmony in any civilization paradoxically, however, hence it indicate in some literature as a double edged sword (manger 2011:17-23: Obas 2009)” from time immemorial religious bigots have attempt to legitimize violence in the name of God. Contemporary acts of extreme violence such as terrorist attacks up after justified as only war fan” in the past two decade around the world thereby gaining authority as one of the prime security challenges confronting the world in the walk of the cold war (Juerjeu Sineyer 2000:6: Abu. Nemer 2000). A study societies that are divided along by political tenatorial and ethnic differences (Rayual-Querol 2002) perhaps, thus, reality explain the prime position that religious (rises violence) occupied on Nigeria security pyramid. As we should see in this research religiously motivated violence has plagued the country more than any other security challenges.

There are many several causal diagnoses of religious conflict in Nigeria, but premium attention to the underlying socio-political, economic and governance factors that participates not only religious, but violence conflict generally. This research presents a point of departure of an analytical inquiry into the immediate and visible factors that are triggered religious crises in the country. Primarily this study identify the immediate and invisible derivers of religious violence in Nigeria and evaluate the management strategies that the Nigeria state has adopted for its containment over the year. It includes by making recommendation to the various religious community in Nigeria as well as Nigeria state on appropriate strategies for managing religious crises.

As noted earlier: religious sometimes play significant roles commercial harmony, yet it is after instrumentalize political and other established interest to the detriment of peace and social harmony. This study is therefore made to dispassionately always these conflict including, element of religious practice by both religious and communities without any intent to undermine the integrity of their principles or create a sense of bias. Hence, the questions on the lip of so many Nigerians are that “what had been probable causes of these trends.

While many cause have been highlighted by different authors and writers has the bane which include major sources as economic, socio-political and governance factors etc.

These may not be only possible causes nevertheless, this researcher has decided to investigate causes of religious crisis and its effect on political stability.

• STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Both the remote socio-political and economic derivers as well as the immediate factors that generate religious violence in Nigeria.

Poverty, corruption, non-employment of pre-various probe panel reports, impartiality at past perpetrators and worship centres, provocative and inciting utterance sensational journalist, political manipulation of religious, incitement in the in the social media and mobile telephony among others, as key causes of religious violence in Western Nigeria such as Lagos.

1.3  PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

1. To know if socio-economic, political and government defeats are the major causes of religious crisis.
2. To know if religious intolerance fundamental list and extremism has impact on religious crisis in Nigeria
3.    To provide solution to the identified causes of religious crisis.

• SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

GOVERNMENT: This study will enable the government to have knowledge on the causes of religious crisis and how to tackle such causes.

INDIVIDUAL: This study will enable people to be at alert about the causes of religious crisis, be in their area or nearest communities and how to proffer possible remedy to the issues.

SOCIETY: This study will enable the society to know the causes of religious crisis and its effect on political stability and people that are govern them. It will also make them to be more practice and transparence in the process of carrying out research works in the entire society.

• SCOPE/DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Crises is a part and parcel of people life, in other to effectively and efficiently carryout this work, the study focus on religious crisis and used people of Ojo local government as a cases study.

This research work is limited to Ojo Local Government Area due to the following reasons or limitations.

1. Financial limitation
2. Difficulty in transportation
3. Time constraints due to other academic commitment.
