THE IMPACT OF POLYGAMOUS FAMILY ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PUPILS IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN MUSHIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE
ABSTRACT
It’s crucial to note that the role of family in students academic performance cannot be over emphasizes, hence this research work examined the impact of polygamous family on academic performance of pupils in public primary schools in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The study was taken to determine the level of academic performance of pupils from polygamy home and monogamy home some performance could be negative and some are positive in primary school 50 Fifty questionnaires were administered randomly to 5 selected schools in Mushin Local Government Area. 50 questionnaires were distributed to each school, responses treated accordingly. The findings were subjected to percentage.
In conclusion family should know the kind of back ground to practice.

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The home is the premier agent of education to the child. Therefore the way he lives, the food he eats and his life style is influenced by the home. The type of family system the child is exposed to greatly influence his academic achievement in school.
Among the Ijebu, polygamous and monogamous are the two forms of families stem practiced. Polygamous has been the form of marriage known and widely practiced among the Yoruba before the advent of Christianity in the middle of 19 century. This form of marriage allows a man to marry more than a wife. The economy of the country that centered on Agriculture made polygamy not desirable but necessary. Family is labour intensive and polygamy is capable of proving the desired labour force than monogamy. It follows than that a man should get many wives so as to raise numerous children who will cultivate many hectares of land. The corollary is that polygamy was the road to wealth or any recognizable social status like Chieftaincy tittles.
In our modern societies the concept of polygamous have created serious problems in that our societal leaders even in the churches today has become polygamists while some people think it is against the will of God and in some cases people are of the view that since polygamous is part of African culture these people see no reason why polygamous could not be continued in African.
Polygamous in a simple language and according to the Advance Dictionary, it says that polygamy is the custom of having more than one wife at the same time.
Some group of people are of the view that great man of the Bible practiced polygamy, such people like Jacob, Solomon, David, Paul, Saul, Josua and so on, but in the same perspective some problems are peculiar to polygamists home which is uncommon in a monogamist home such problem like hatred, rivalry which is not expected of a Christian home.
It is said that polygamy is a form of marriage while monogamy is another form each of them have their own advantage and disadvantage they are appropriate to different types of society and it is not the task of any Church to make any absolute judgment between them and it is not sinful where it is customs.
So far as African culture is concerned, it might be said that modernization requires a certain mobilization of individual resources and energies by central governments that mobilization is made possible by stressing original African values and norms since polygamy belongs to the cultures heritage of the African past. It becomes necessary for African to decide whether to accept the past indiscriminately or to differentiate between the wheat and the chaff of historical legacy.
Polygamous has various impact on people that practice it, these days some do not fit into the modern society or into the traditional society, this will be discussed in the later chapter.
Nevertheless it should be recorded that back of our mind there is no chapter or verse in the bible commending every Christian not to practice polygamy but people that hold certain position or offices are required to have only one wife at the same time if one believes that he or she is a chosen of God and that everybody has been called to work in the vineyard of God will chosen to remain in a monogamy stage of marriage Paul said people should not multiply wives especially Bishop and Pastors, he says a Bishop most be above reproach, the husband of one wife, but one should note that Genesis create only one wife for Adam.
Polygamous is not expressly forbidden in the Old Testament, nor was it uncommon in ancient Isreal, but it was not consistent with the spirit of the original institution, which plainly demands the union of one man and one woman in marriage. Extra matrimonial connection might not be seriously condemned in the Gentile word but for getting of legitimate children it was a rule that there should be only one wife to one husband.
In Nigeria today, family set up has become more complex and sophisticated that it was a century ago. Faniran (1982) in Nwosu (2004) hinted that many Nigeria homes today the concept of monogamy is giving way to polygamy very rapidly even among the educated people. It is pertinent therefore to find out the extent to which monogamous and polygamous families influence the academic achievement of the children.
Statement of the problem
In Nigeria, Ogun State in particular, the issue of academic performance of secondary school student from polygamous and monogamous families has become a house hold discussion. Efforts would be made to find out the academic performance of both families and whether children from polygamous family perform better or worse than monogamous family. In our society, polygamous has become the main form of marriage or type of family. It is observed that polygamous family has failed to perform its’ function. The socio-economic background, Quarrel, separation etc. has been the major problem facing polygamous family today that affect the pupils academically, a proper understanding of the impact of polygamous on the performance of pupils in public primary school, government and society at large to approach the issue of proper care with the desire of consciousness.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to examine the effectiveness and weakness of polygamous family toward their children academic performance.
Also the purpose of the study is to know how multiple spouses can affect student academic performance in school.
It is also proposed to examine how socio-economic background affects children from polygamous family.
Research Questions
- Is there significant difference between male pupils from polygamy family and monogamy family in respect of academic performance?
- Is there any significant difference between female pupils from polygamous family and monogamous family?
- Is there significant difference between the academic performance of pupils from polygamous and monogamous families?
Can the type of family related to religious of the pupils. Can multiple mothers/wives in the family affect child’s performance academically?
Research Hypotheses
- There is no significant different between the performance of male pupils from polygamous home to male pupils in monogamous home.
- There is no significant different between the performance of female pupils from polygamous family and female in monogamous family.
- There is no significant different between the performance of pupil from monogamous family and polygamous family.
Significance of the Study
The information of the study will provide basic fundamental for effective guidance for families to function well in training their children and spouses to enhance effective performance in school. It is believed that the findings of the study will provoke further research in the impact of polygamy on pupils academic performance.
Scope/Delimitation of the Study
The research is Centre on Mushin and its environment. The result of the study will base on data supplied by the pupils, teacher and some other people in Local Educational District and those gathered from other people in the society through questionnaires. This research judgment is therefore dependent on the accuracy and quality of data supplied.
Definition of Terms
Family: This consists of people that are related by blood, marriage or adoption.
Polygamy: It is a system of marrying multiple spouses.
Polyandry: It is a system in which a woman is entitled to many husband.
Siviorate: It is a type of polygamy where by the wives sister is related to each other.
Non-Soratate: It is a type of polygamy in which the wives are not sister to each other.
Fraternal: It is a polyandry whereby the husbands are related.
Levirate: This is also a form of polyandry whereby the husbands are related.
Monogamy: It is a system of one wife one husband, it is a process by which a man is joined to one wife or a woman is entitled to one husband.
