CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Most people know, or are taught at an early age, how to process information and develop a visual and audio difficulties. Generally, a person with learning disabilities experience difficulties in study skills, writing skills, oral skills, reading skills, Mathematics skills and Social skills.
In studying, students experience inability to organize time therefore unable to finish assignments on time and they have trouble taking rides and following instructions.
They often have difficulty spelling correctly and have frequent grammatical errors which results in poor sentence structure and poor penmanship. They are usually slow readers and sometimes have incorrect comprehension and poor retention. Confusion with Mathematics symbols are common, as well as difficulty with concepts of time and money. Realizing their inabilities result to low self-esteem which greatly affects their social skills. They might have impulsive behaviour and disorientated in time. Dealing with students with learning disabilities takes patience.
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE PROBLEM
The Information and communication technology stands for information and communication Technologies and is defined as a “Diverse set of Technological tools and resources used to communicate, and to create, disseminate, store and manage information. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become a very important part of the educational delivery and management processes. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to a great extent facilitates the acquisition and absorption of knowledge and hence can provide extra ordinary opportunities to developing countries for enhancing their educational systems particularly for the underprivileged constituency, and thereby for raising the level of quality of life of their people.
The new communications technologies promise to reduce the sense of isolation and open access to knowledge in ways unthinkable not long ago. Information and Communication Technologies is changing processes of teaching and learning by adding elements of vitality to learning environments including virtual environments for the purpose. New technologies make it possible for complicated collaborative activities of teaching and learning by dividing it in space and time, with seamless connectivity between them. Due to its capability to offer anytime and anywhere, access to remote learning resources, Information and Communication Technology is a potentially powerful tool for offering educational opportunities both to previously underserved constituencies in persons with disabilities, as well as all others who for reasons of cost or because of time constraints are unable to register for or afford the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipments.
The new digital Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is not single technology but combination of hardware, multimedia and delivery systems.
Today, Information and Communication Technology ( ICT) encompasses a great range of rapidly evolving technologies such as desktop, note book and handheld computers, digital cameras, local area networking, blue tooth, the internet, cloud computing, the world wide web, streaming and DVDS and applications such as word processors, spread sheets, tutorial, simulations, e-mail, digital libraries, computer-mediated conferencing, video conferencing, virtual environment, simulator, emulator, etc. it is important to mention that the users of newer Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)enabling the existing resources and services to be continuous use.
Till the recent past, the usual interface between an assistive device and an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system was hard wired. With the development in wireless system now the potential for new types of Communication services which may assist different kind of disabled are emerging. For example, disabled people may communicate to application using wireless devices for locating (for blind) and communication with the terminates.
Developments in infrared links make it feasible for a disabled user to have a hand control unit with an infrared link to the terminal. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is proving very effective in delivering learning to the disabled. An illustrious example in this respect is that of Stephen Hawking, the world, Renowned Astrophysicist, who cannot even move any of his limbs and hardly can utter some words contributing significantly at the highest level to the world of knowledge and research. It became possible due to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) device developed for him to communicate his ideas to the world. The role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can be easily realized now as the Nigerian Government has placed strong emphasis on its importance.
1.2 STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM
This study will focus on the effective use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching adolescents with learning disabilities in basic classes, therefore, the major problems of the study is to highlight the effective use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching adolescents with learning disabilities. Meanwhile, these major problems are further broken down into the following minor questions.
- What roles does Information and Communication Technology (ICT) play in teaching and learning processes?
- Does Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have impact on the adolescents?
- Does Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enhance the teaching of adolescents with learning disabilities?
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objectives of the study are therefore summarized as follows:
- To determine the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching adolescents with learning disabilities.
- To enhance better ways of teaching pupils with learning disabilities.
- To set up on environment using the internet and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in assisting students with learning disabilities.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This researcher intends to find out the effective use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching adolescents with learning disabilities in basic classes.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study will be focused mainly on the effective use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching adolescent with learning disabilities in basic classes.
1.6 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This study is limited to Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State where there is a lot of adolescent in the basic classes in the Area.
1.7 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following research questions are generated in order to carry out the study:
- To what extent has Information and Communication Technology (ICT) contributed to the teaching of adolescent with learning disabilities
- Does the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) really worth effort of the adolescents.
- Do special education teachers have adequate knowledge, skills and experience in the use of Information and Communication gadgets
1.8 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
For the purpose of this research, the following statement a re deduced to examine, the effective use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching adolescent with learning disabilities in basic classes.
HoI: There is no significant differences between the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and other methods of teaching.
HoII: There is not significant difference between the course of study and knowledge of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
HoIII: There is no significant relationship between Information and Communication Technology (ICT) instructional aids for adolescent with learning disabilities.
1.10 DEFINITION OF TERMS
ICT: Information and Communication Technology
Adolescent: A young person who is developing from a child into an adult, usually between the ages of 13 and 18 years.
Teaching: Is a process of impacting knowledge skills, experience into an individual.
