THE IMPACT OF COMPUTER LITERACY IN EDUCATIONAL SET-UP(A CASE STUDY OF ALLOVER CENTRAL POLYTECHNIC ADO-ODO)
ABSTRACT
This research work was carried out in ado-Odo ota local government Area in ogun state. The primary aim is to determine the impact of computer literacy in educational set-up, in tertiary institution of learning in the local government area.
The school covered is Allover central polytechnic, ota as the only fully operational polytechnic in the area. The target population comprises of the students of computer science and Accounting department. The sample survey adopts a descriptive design using stratified hypothesis were used to guide the researcher in data collection and analysis with the questionnaire type being a closed one.
Analysis of data was done with the calculation of regression analysis coefficient and AR-test coefficient. The result obtained is a pointed to the fact that Age or sex could not contribute any difficulty or serve as stumbling blocks in the drive for computer literacy.
Computer literacy could affect and contribute positively to the learning prowess and culture of professions including Education.
The conclusion of this research (from tested hypothesis) is that
- There is no significant relationship between the computer literacy and education Accounting students academic performance
- There is no significant relationship between age and sex of the respondent/ students and computer literacy.
It is recommended to the government, parents, school authorities and other curriculum planners to
- Strive to address aspect of our life that seems to discriminate against women and possibly or perhaps promulgate laws that can protect the women education since female students are more than their male counter path.
- Make graduate and under-graduate of our institution competitive with their counter paths in the world in this age of computerization, technology and globalization .
- There is this piece of advice to the educational researchers (in the hope to get more secured date and information to further research into such topic as “the effects of computer virus or security and safety of computer data in an organizations” as well as “Eradicating computer virus to avoid data Destructions.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Today, the world is experiencing “globalization” owing to rapid breakthrough in the Information and Communication Technologies. The beauty of these new technologies in education is that they provide opportunities for improving the quality of the teaching and learning process, reducing training time and cost, promoting interactivity and impacting generally on educational theory and practice.
Teachers, teacher – trainers and educationists who are not familiar with the technologies they find themselves being threatened by professional obsolescence – a feeling that one is no longer useful in his profession. A big cultural – technological gap is taking place and if it is not adequately checked at the early. it stage will result in serious consequences in the output of quality human resources.
The need to equip every profession with the means of catching up with the wind of change become highly imperative.
BACKGROUND TO THE PROBLEM
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF ALLOVER CENTRAL POLYTECHNIC
This institution is established with approval from the federal government through the National Board of technical Education (NBTE) with campus at Sango – Ota, Ogun State on 8th December, 2003 bearing Allover Central polytechnic.
“It was established by professionals who share the believe that sound and qualitative education at tertiary level is a pre-requisite to technological advancement of our great nation – Nigeria. It was formerly called Motipass Professionals Limited since 1987 with the aim of preparing students for professional examinations like ICAN, CIBN, CITN, etc.
As a polytechnic, it offers two years full time and three years part-time for National and Higher Diploma programmes in Accounting, Computer Science and the effect of computer on Information Technology. The school offers Medical services, Bus Service and Hotel Services with Sports concern cum encouragement to the religious faithful on campus and total discouragement to cultism.
At Allover Central Polytechnic discipline, honesty, hardworking, nothing is impossible to achieve.
The unique features of this polytechnic is singled out of reflect the effect of computer literacy in he study of Financial Accounting in tertiary institution in our Local Government.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It has been discovered that there is inadequate availability of computer set per a number of students which account for increased illiteracy level in computer concepts and it handling of its respective hardware and peripherals. There is shortage of trained manpower to handle the instructional materials and the maintenance of this technological invention that makes one wonder if there will be any efficient change in the educational system.
PROPOSE OF THE STUDY:
The educational system in our various tertiary institution is in crisis and chaotic situation which calls for questioning the pedagogical method in use. The adverse effect of this new invention shall be explored to create adjusting development in addition to the already existing and known advantages to redeem the educational system. This makes this project a must.
RESEARCH QUESTION
The research focuses on the impact of computer literacy in educational set up. The following questions are relevant
- What is the effect of computer in terms of educating the learner?
- What has been the impact of computer literacy on improving the learning rate of learner?
- What are the negative impacts of computer in our tertiary institutions?
- What is its achievement or the level of success or failure before computer literacy?
- What can the policymaker do to reduce the negative influence on learner?
RESERCH HYPOTHESIS:
Null Hypothesis Ho (1) Computer literacy does not significantly depend on Age of the students.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:
Computer has been useful for nation building and manpower development. However, the findings of this research shall be useful as:
- Reference for educations and curriculum planners to adjust their programmes towards educational development.
- A challenge to the computer operators to develop good maintenance culture.
- An opportunity to assess the viability of using computer
- A booster to students to cultivate good study habit
- A challenge to invest in the educational sector particularly in Ado-Odo Ota local government Area of ogun state.
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The research under this study at acted to Allover central Polytechnic as the only functional and fully operational polytechnic in Ado-odo /ota local government. The computer science and accounting department are the main target, focusing on the heads of departments, teachers/ lecturers and the students respectively
DEFINITION OF TERMS:
It is noteworthy to note some of the major terms that are to be made use of. They are outlined and described here under.
- Computer: an electronic machine that accept data through the input device, process it through the central processing unit and release information through the output devices.
- The system: It is referred to as the computer itself. A complete system must have three major components.
- The input devices
- The processor (central processing unit)
- The output devices
- Hardware sub-system: these are the physical touchable parts of the computer (system) the hardware is divided into two (2) parts.
- The central processing unit
- The peripherals
- The C P U: this is the central processing unit which perform the ultimate and major functions of the system. It is divided into three(3)
- Central / internal memories that keeps data and information in the system
- Arithmetic and logical unit that performs addition, subtraction e.t.c
- Control unit that control the working of other parts of the system.
- The peripherals: these are the physical devises that are attached to the c.p.u for optimum performance such as.
- Input devises like card reader, keyboard, and scanner e.t.c.
- Output devises like visual display unit or monitor, teleprompters, printers e.t.c
- Second/External storage devises like magnetic discs and tapes, diskettes e.t.c
- Software sub-system: these are the programme that allows the system or the computer to perform operations without which the computer will be an empty box. It is divided into two (2)
- System programme
- Application programme
- System’s Programme: These are the programme that allow the system or the computer to perform operation or that prepares the computer ready for any problem solving functions , but it is divided into two (2)
- Operation system software for supervising system operations.
- Computer language Translator software for translating instructions into computer machine readable forms.
- Application programme: These are the programme that are used by the system to solve specific problems such as Microsoft word, Microsoft excel e.t.c
- Pedagogical: this is concerned with teaching methodological of giving instructions in the teaching-learning environments.
Well, computer as a machine does not understand the human language at the moment anyway. Therefore, computers have to be instructed using specialized computer language programme called programme language
