IMPLICATION OF COMPUTER LABORATORY ETHICS AND CULTURE ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC ATTAINMENT
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the implication of computer laboratory Ethics and culture on students Academic Attainment. The study is a descriptive research design which involves a total number 100 computer students, 50 from part I and 50 from part II. Questionnaires designed for the students was the major instruments that was used for the collection of data. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentage and chi-square analysis to test the three generated hypotheses at 0.05. The findings reveal that Academic Attainment of students in computer depends solemnly on the laboratory Ethics and culture being given. The reduction in student’s academic attainment in computer can be traced to lack of guiding principles in the laboratory, and enforcement of this ethics on students by the teacher/instructor negatively. At the end, summary, conclusion, suggestions and recommendations were proffered by the researcher.

- INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Ethics is defined as the basic concept and fundamental principle of human conducts. In Education, Ethics is needed in helping the school authority in the proper upbringing of the students for the purpose of excellent outcome in their academic attainment and also to build them up morally for their future. Ethics been the basic concept and fundamental principle of human conduct, and a branch of philosophy that involves systematizing, defending and recommending concept of right and wrong conduct has been a source of help to the school in order to achieve these goals. In schools now for example, there are various sections where teaching and learning always takes place, places like the laboratories, workshops, music room, visual art room e.t.c. In all these sections that we have, we see that there are various principles that is been laid down for the students in helping them guide themselves both physically and academically when they find themselves in any of these section.
Looking at the principles been laid down in these various section in Education, we shall be studying the computer laboratory Ethics and culture. Looking at what computer laboratory Ethics; we could say it is the set of moral principles that regulates the use of computer in the laboratory by the students. In computer laboratory as we know that students mostly are responsible for the proper care of equipment and software, and the misuse of all the laboratory equipment might lead to student expulsion from the laboratory or attracts other penalty, so the students are therefore expected to put up a good behaviour when they are in the laboratory. Some such issues of computer ethics include intellectual property right, privacy concern and how computer affects students and the society. To students, Ethics is a well founded standart that make the action right and wrong and it also help to categorise different values such as integrity, discipline, trust and honesty among others and apply them in daily lives.
With these, we see that Ethics plays a formidable role in the academic upbringing of the students and they are not just only given to guide the students work in the laboratory, but also to help the student work on improving their moral attitudes when they are in the laboratory. However, for students to attain a maximum level of understanding and skill acquisition there must be strict adherence to the guiding principle and operational conduct in the computer laboratory by the students. So when Ethics is duly followed, it helps in building up the character and attitude to be put up by the students physically, mentally, morally and academically.
Ashiq, Mohammed and Azra (2011)stated that the importance of students learning to put up good attitude and their latent skill to optimal use is self evident as Ethics inculcates good decision making abilities by students when they are in the laboratory.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The study intends to find out the poor attitude of students while in the laboratory. One is therefore concerned about the impacts and effect of Ethics in the computer laboratory. The students establish the relationship between student’s poor attitude in the laboratory and the role of Ethics and culture. Does Ethics has anything to do with the student’s poor attitude in the laboratory, all these are what the study intends to find out and proffer possible solution to any identified problem during the study.
1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study is to investigate the roles and functions of Ethics and culture on student’s poor attitude in the laboratory.
The research will therefore elaborate and shield more on;
- Why Ethics and culture is needed in the computer laboratory
- Also to know if Ethics and culture is relevant in helping the student to improve their attitude when they are in the laboratory
- The study will establish the relationship between student’s poor attitude in the laboratory and the roles of Ethics and culture.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The study seeks to provide answers to the following research question;
- Is there any significance relevance of laboratory Ethics and culture on student’s academic attainment?
- How is Ethics and culture and culture been enforced in the laboratory by the teachers help to achieve positive change in the students behaviour?
- What are the likely implications of not following the computer laboratory Ethics and culture on student’s attitude outside the school system.
1.5 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
Ho1: There is no significant relevance of laboratory ethics and culture on student’s academic attainment
Ho2: Ethics and culture being enforced in the laboratory by the teacher will not help achieve positive change in student’s behaviour
Ho3: Computer laboratory Ethics and culture will not have implication on student’s attitude outside the school system.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study aims at determining fundamentally, an understanding of the implication of computer laboratory Ethics and culture on student academic attainment, and at such, this research will provide a helpful guide of knowledge about computer laboratory ethics.
In essence, the findings of this study will be fundamental to successful implementation of the implication of computer laboratory ethics and culture at all levels to enable student discover their academic attainment. Perhaps, students may through this study be provided with an intuition and better perception.
1.7 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The study was focused mainly to examine the implication of Ethics and culture on student’s academic attainment among computer students of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education Otto/ijanikin, Lagos.
