CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Computer Entrepreneurship seen as a means or source of given one an established knowledge or skill to comfortably earn a living, either by given the services to others as a hawker or living a designated place for business or services transaction.

It is a common experience that about 80% (eighty percent) of the graduates from Nigeria universities find it very difficult to get employment every year. This is partly due to cumulate of the universities and other territory institution, which lay emphasis on training for white-collar job or promotion due to the sandwich program running. For examples current national and regional policy thrusts like the national economic empowerment and development strategy (NEEDS) and the new partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) have been sensitizing on poverty Eradication, Employment-generation and wealth creation as well as public-private partnership. Accordingly a number of initiative like the National Poverty Eradication Programmer (NAPEP) and the establishment of small and medium Enterprises Development agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) have been introduced (OKOJIE, 2008, OSIBANJO,2006).

Funning enough, you hardly get a discipline that is not computer absorbing which make the future of Nigeria computer students in exhaustible. It really amused me when I see many computer sandwich students limiting their potential to classroom work or promotion in their offices.

The computer Education/knowledge that gives in Ekiti state university sandwich programme which includes computer graphic, this gives ample opportunities in cartoon designs both in movies and in office application, computer Desktop publishing, which really enhance one to command secretarial works, computer viruses, you cannot under estimate people that continently make a living from debugging virus from system for people or customers. Computer maintenance and repair, I was surprise when it came to my fore, that this remaining the easiest, fastest skill to acquire these days, so with the knowledge from school, put one ahead of early grabbing of the skill.

I can not but mention few, as there is a great and un-taped abundant future for Nigeria computer student so, I believed that if the diligences needed is given to this field both from the teacher and students, we can even add the benefit to our gross domestic product (GDP). America is know today as the world leader in entrepreneurship which has boosted their economy the Asian world took a  serious step in learning and understanding from the developed countries (America, England and Germany) before lunching into it today they seen to be the future world. They are not only in information technology (IT) or computer technology, but also in medicine and constructions.

Every great company started as a new venture, and every product started as a germ of an idea in someone imagination. By and large we all have good ideas, but relatively few of us (student of sandwich) have the drive, energy and skill to promote and develop those ideas and to see them through to commercial fruition. Computer entrepreneurship is the science and the art of setting new ventures in motion.

1.1  BACK GROUND OF THE STUDY

A common misconception is that any business man or anyone who start a business, according to economist and Schumpter, is not the main component of entrepreneurship rather; entrepreneurship is concerned with stimulating economic progress through innovation and action.

Entrepreneurship has been debated among scholar, education, researchers and policy makers since the concept was first established in the early 1700’s. The term entrepreneurship comes from French verb “Entrepredre” and the German word “Unternehmen”, but means to undertake.

Bygrave and Hofer in 1891 defined the entrepreneurship process as involving all the functions activities and actions associated with perceiving of opportunities and creation of organization to pursue them.

Joseph Schumpter introduced the modern definition of entrepreneurship in 1934 according to Schumpter the carrying out of new combination, we called enterprise and the individual whose function it is to carry them out we called entrepreneur.

Peter D Meker proposed that entrepreneurship is a practice. What this means is that entrepreneurship is not a state of being nor is it characterized by making plan that are not acted upon. Entrepreneurship being with action, creation of new organization but, when an individual create a new organization, they have entered the entrepreneurship paradigm.

But according to oxford- Advanced Learners Dictionary the 6th edition, entrepreneurship is defined or explained as the person who makes money by starting or running business especially when this involves taking financial risks.

Entrepreneurship is the science and the art of setting new ventures in motion for the Nigeria student future. Should (students of sandwich programme of Ekiti state university) know something about entrepreneurship?

  1. Society wants you (student of sandwich to be entrepreneurial. Entrepreneurial ventures, particularly high-growth ventures such as knowledge and technology ventures, are thought to stimulate commerce and produce new jobs. As a computer entrepreneurship student, you are in a position to be excellent wealth generation not only for your own private economy, but also for the society you live in.
  2. Your employer wants you to be entrepreneurial. They don’t necessarily want you (student of sandwich programme) to quit and form your spin of company in direct competition with them, but established new company that are dependent on innovation and growth for survival and it is the entrepreneurial spirit (intrapreneurs) that drive this.
  3. Do you want to work on someone else project all your life? As working professional you need interesting, stimulating and productive working lives, this means of various point in your life you will want to set different kinds of ventures in actions.

Entrepreneurship is a relatively young discipline with it root in management theory and economic, however there is a considerable literature and the object figures on most university curricula nevertheless the thing computer entrepreneurship and the future of Nigeria student need to know about computer entrepreneurship, the competence that they need to acquired are not necessary generalized skill and knowledge that everyone. From carpenter to hairdressers to communication. Consultant need these note therefore identify some specific skills and knowledge that are relevant for computer entrepreneurship where as computer entrepreneurship is often taught in a practical way (how do you develop your idea for a business into a business plan) there are mainly theoretical course notes.

Since future is the time that will come after the present or the event that will happen then, or the possibility of being successful or surviving at a later time (according to the oxford advanced learners dictionary, the sixth edition) we will understand computer entrepreneurship as driving (promoting) computer or IT ventures, where the ventures might be a new business, software product, service or engineering practice and the context might be within an existing firm or the creation of the new one. However this relatively wide focus area won’t disguise the fact that there is a classical or traditional central area of concern to the subject computer entrepreneurship or IT. Start up company. What should the Nigeria futures students took for this kind of start up? Casumano answers

  • A strong management team
  • An attractive market
  • A compelling new product, service or hybrid solution (mixture of both)
  • Strong evidence of consumers interests
  • A plan to overcome the credibility gap (the fear among customer and investor that the start up will fail) that is the sandwich student taught about been an entrepreneurial
  • A business model showing early growth and profit potential
  • Flexibility in strategy and product offering (ability to adapt to changing circumstances)
  • The potential for a course pay off to investors.

More so, the computer entrepreneurship trial objective is wealth creation. However for the computer entrepreneur, wealth creation is simply a mean to an end. The computer entrepreneurship participates in profit seeking business ventures if only to use the profit generated to create valuable computer program for the whole community.

Research evidence shows that the computer entrepreneurship harnesses entrepreneurship skill to do social good. According to J. Gregory Dees, computer entrepreneurship combines the passion of a social mission with an image of business like discipline, and determination commonly associated with for instance, the high tech pioneer of Silicon Valley.

  • PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
