CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Biology is the science of living systems. It is however inherently. Inter-disciplinary, requiring a knowledge of the physical sciences and mathematics, although specialties may be oriented toward a group of organisms or a level of organization.

This subject is being made compulsory for every student in the secondary schools, so a large number of students register for it in the senior secondary school certificate examinations.

The performance of students in biology at the senior secondary certificate examination level over the years have shown a downward trend inspite of the position occupied by biology in our society, it is sad to note that it is a subject which parents, students and teachers complain about.

As a result of poor understanding of biology concepts, lack of success, feeling of frustration and insecurity a lot of intelligent students have developed negative attitudes towards learning of biology.

Furthermore, the magnitude of sex – differences has not been found to be inform across subject areas. Science subjects such as mathematics, chemistry and physics are found difficult by most students who tend to avoid them, but with biology, it is not so.

Since, the very beginning of human history, men have taken an interest in what they saw, particularly in everything that moves and grows and can be alive.

Biology is not abstract and as such, it is very interesting. Since it deals with living thing.

The pathetic story about this subject is that students achievements so far has been poor. As a result of the poor performances of students, this study is aimed at finding out the attitudes of boys and girls.

Hence the SSS III student have to be used.

STATEMENTS OF PROBLEM

Reason for this study is mainly to find out the achievements and attitudinal pattern of boys and girls in biology.

It was noted that the performances so far have not been very encouraging, poor understanding of biology concepts, lack of success, feeling of frustration, insecurity, has made students show negative attitude towards biology.

Thus, from the above preamble and explanation, the investigation will make attempt in finding out how best the attitudes and achievements of students in biology can be improved.

THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is summarized as follows:

  1. To find out the attitudes and achievement of SSS II students towards biology.
  2. To find out the factors responsible for such attitude.
  3. To find out the steps to take in order to improve the performance.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this study will provide basis for effective guidance by secondary school teachers to modify or reinforce students attitude towards biology. It is also hoped that the finding of this study will provoke further research in biology.

HYPOTHESIS

  1. There is no significant difference between the attitude of boys and girls towards biology in mixed schools.
  2. There is no significant difference between the attitudes of students in mixed schools and single schools towards biology.
  3. There is no significant difference between the performance of boys and girls in biology in mixed schools.

SCOPE/DELIMITATION

It is the intention of the researcher to find out the effect of sex on biology at the senior secondary school level. This study will be focused mainly on students relations (attitude) towards biology adopted by their school teachers in some selected secondary schools in Ifo Local Education District.
