ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR AND ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES OF STUDENT’S IMPLICATION FOR COUNSELING IN IFO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OGUN STATE

 

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study is to investigate anti-social behaviour and academic activities of student’s implication for counseling in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. The sample of five (5) selected schools was used 20 students were randomly selected from each school thereby making a total of 100 students who were used for the study. Two (2) hypotheses were generated and students responses with regards to the questionnaire testing were carefully analyzed using percentage and chi-square analyzed. It was found among others that there is no difference between anti-social behaviour of students and academic activities of the students and also there is no difference between anti-social behaviour and academic activities among male and female’s students. Recommendation counselling shall be compulsory in schools and that were made among others that there should be enlightenment programme for them on negative effect of anti-social behaviour and its consequences.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The concept of anti-social behaviour is associated with the way students live their life in various communities.

Behaviour is considered abnormal or antisocial if it is uncommon, different from the norm and does not conform to what society expects.

School counselors provides counselling programs in three domains, academic, career and personal/social. Their services and programs help students resolve emotional social or behavioral problems and help them to develop a clearer focus sense of direction.

Career has been defined by Homby (2006) as a series of jobs that a person has at a particular time while Morakinyo (2005) also defined career as what one is going to do as to make a living.

From literature it is a period of 13 – 18 years of an individual’s life. It is a period of rapid social expansion. Agubosi (2003) stated that it is the era of peer grouping when the adolescents spend most time with their age group.

This stage is a period of storm and stress (Bolarinwa 1999, Olayinka 1997) identify information Otarenren (2001), Agubosi (2003) out-lined some causes of ineffective study that consequent to poor academic achievement in adolescent students.

Adolescents that have problem in their social lives are likely not to perform well and are usually withdrawn shy and anti-social among their mates.

The end result of truancy ad absenteeism form the student to Obe (1998), truancy is when a student stays away from school regularly without permission whereas absenteeism when there is high rate of absence when regular attendance is required.

From literature, truancy and absenteeism are likely to be roots of indiscipline in secondary schools.

Bullying is now recognizing as a wide spread and often neglected problem in schools and often neglected problem in schools around the world, and one has serious implications for children who are victimized by bullies and for those who perpetrate the bullying.

Consequently, educational stakeholder, teachers, parents and the counsellors should put into cognizance adolescent chaotic stage when handling them.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The contemporary society is characterized with corruption, drug abuse, child trafficking, stealing, prostitution and other misconducts. The evil-loaded state of the society is primarily caused by anti-social behaviour among all categories of the people in the society including the adolescents.

Anti-social behaviour among the adolescence in the contemporary society is at its peak and now unbearable, that calls for attention whose world is a microcosm of the entire society.

PURPOSE OF STUDY

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between anti-social behaviour of students and their academic achievement applied to both gender (male and female).

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

In order to realize the above objectives, the following research questions were raised:-

  1. What is the relationship between anti-social behaviour of students and their academic activities?
  2. Is the anti-social behaviour of the students (adolescent) and academic activities the same for both boys and girls.

HYPOTHESES

  1. There will be no significant relationship between anti-social behaviour of students and academic activities.
  2. There will be no significant relationship between anti-social behaviour and academic activities of the adolescent for both genders (male and female).

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of this study is to cover on anti-social behaviour among the secondary schools students in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State and to tackle the act of anti-social behaviour and academic problems among the adolescence.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following terms are explained in the study

ABSENTEEISM: It means the act of being frequently away from work or school, especially without good reasons.

In this study it is define by Obe (1998) as the act of being away from school without permission.

ACADEMICS: It means connected with education especially studying in schools and universities.

In this study it was defined by Daramola (1992) as the improvement of knowledge and development skills.

ACHIEVEMENT: It means a king that somebody has done successfully, especially using their own effort and skill: In this study it was defined by Agubosi (2003) as a person who achieves a high level of success.

ADOLESCENCE: It means the time in a person’s life when he or she develops from a child into an adult. In this study it was defined by Bolarinwa and Olayinka 1999, 1997 as the stage or period of storm and stress.

ADOLESCENT: It means the going person who is developing from child into an adult.

CHAOTIC: State of complete confusion and lack of order.

COUNSELLOR: A person who has been trained to advice people with problems, especially personal problems.

IMPLICATION: A possible effect or result of an action or a decision.

INEFFECTIVE: Not achieving what you want to achieve not having any effect.

NORM: A situation or a pattern of behaviour that is usual or expected.

RELATIONSHIP: The way in which two people, groups or countries behave towards each other or deal with each other.
