INTRODUCTION

Home is the house or place where someone stays or lives. It can be a place where you were born or stay as a child.

While family is a group of people who are related to each other including parents and their children, aunties, uncles, grandmothers, grandfathers etc. it is  a social institution that serves as the basic agents of primary socialization of a child. However, a child’s family status and background serves as bedrock to the child’s development in all perspective of life.

Hence, family has the following functions:

  1. Sexual access for the production of new members of the society.
  2. Socialization of new members
  3. Provision of economics support, division of labour or the organization of production, distribution and consumption.
  4. Family may also have political and religious function as the most basic corporate groups in the society.

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Generally, people believe in keeping the ethological norms and value especially the African. As a result of this, the statement of broken homes usually gives bad representation to those concerned. Home is supposed to be a place of comfort and relaxation that entails love, tenderness, caring etc. which enables child to feel protected and secured.

Family unity is very essential and supersede every other relationship as far as life is concerned. Therefore when and where ever that relationship is missing, the child better performance is at risk.

A “BROKEN HOME” means a situation where married couples are not living together or has separated as a result of disagreement or incompatibility. It can also mean end of marital relationship.

Before this separation, it must have assumed that the couple has been experiencing some misunderstanding. For instance the main might have been playing some unaccepted characters like having an extra marital affair or change could occur in the man’s source of income which may degenerate and he could loose control of his house. Some factors must have been the bone of contention as regard the separation.

In Christian belief, divorce of broken home is not accepted, they strongly kick against it, hence the victim should bounce on the growing children. Broken homes are usually as a result of irrational decisions prior to marriages. They are:

  1. Reasons for the first live or attraction
  2. Religious and ethnical belief
  3. Improper courtship before marriage
  4. Social and family pressure
  5. Neglect of continuous and re-current mistakes by the partners.
  6. Inability to forfeit former usual attitudes

Reasons for the first love of attraction could actually leads to some psychological problems in marriage, on the long run, those attraction missing can lead to “BREAKUPS”. Thus says that ‘Love is blind” but marriage exposes the blindness. The couples might not see the attractions on the process and thus deprecation of love comes in. once the homes is broken children experience total deprivation and automatically feel insecure.

  1. The parental care and tenderness is no more.
  2. The joy of home i.e. comfort and relaxation
  3. The basic provision through joint support and combination of resources by both parents.
  4. The opportunity of learning good social behaviour as the example is lacking.

This study therefore is poised to enumerate the various cause and effects of broken homes and see into the possible solutions to this effect.
