CHAPTER ONE

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Research on drug abuse has been of keen interest to educational guidance and counselling and evaluation experts; however, some studies have been carried out on certain aspects of the programme (Ohochel, 1988, Obe, 1983).

Aderoju and Korede, 1983). These studies were Meagers and, in any case, did not investigate the use of social studies curriculum in Curbing drug abuse among junior secondary school students in Nigeria.

Research evidence shows that many drugs addicted students have developed this attitude right from their junior class levels, which may be due to improper understanding of the effects of these Alarming issues of drug abuse students who are used to drug abuse are found to show negative attitudes towards learning at all levels of their education.

Therefore, students makings use of these drugs must be made to understand this. On the other hand, drug abuse is the taking of any substance in a way that could damage the user’s health or ability to function.

drug is a substance used as a medicine or medicine. It is also a medicine or substance that stimulates the nervous system, especially one that is addictive.

A drug is any chemical that causes a biochemical reaction when digested.

Aspirin, laxatives, Trandguilizers. Amphetamine, alcohol and smoking of tobacco and cigarettes are the commonly abused drugs. They have no medical accepted application. The drug group most associated with drug abuse are the Opiates, Barbiturates, tranquillizers, amphetamines, and hallucinogens.

Many personal, cultural, and social factors influence drug abuse; people who feel capable of controlling their destined, students, youth, the unemployed, and the mentally ill have others turn to drugs as a solution to their problems for these students. The temporary tranquillity or excitement that drugs provide makes life liable.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of the study, therefore, is summarized as follows:

  1. To find out the pattern of the general attitude of junior secondary school students towards drug abuse practice.
  2. To find out if their attitude may depend on sex, age and school location.
  3. To determine the impact of social studies education regarding checking the attitude toward drug abuse among junior secondary school students.

1.3 PROBLEM OF THE STUDY?

  1. Addiction effects will make them lose focus on their academic pursuit.
  2. It affects them psychologically and leads them to a different society.
  3. It affects their health
  4. It leads them to crime
  5. It also leads students to violence, senseless stealing, rape and other violent attacks on fellow innocent students.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. Is there any significant relationship between students’ attitudes toward the practice of drug abuse and the sex students?
  2. Is there any significant relationship between students’ attitudes towards drugs and their age?
  3. Is there any significant relationship between knowledge of key social studies concepts and indulgence in drug abuse use?
    • RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
  1. There is no significant relationship between students’ attitudes toward the practice of drug abuse and the sex students.
  2. There is no significant relationship between students’ attitudes towards drug abuse and their age.
  3. There is no significant relationship between knowledge of key social studies concepts and indulgence in drug users.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will provide the basis for effective guidance to modify student attitudes towards the practice of drug abuse. This study is also significant because its finding will provoke further research on the effects and causes of drug abuse among Nigerian youths.

1.7 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study would be limited to the junior secondary school alone and only the secondary school course. Lagos state is the least area covering about 35 local government areas; as a result, all could not be covered as such; Ojo local government will be used for the study.

1.8 LIMITATIONS

The study was limited to Ojo Local Government Area Lagos State due to the researcher’s time and financial restrain.

1.9 SUMMARY DEFINITION OF TERMS

  1. ASPIRIN: A common drug used for relieving pain and reducing fever. It is used in the form of tablets.
  2. ADDICTED: Able to stop taking or using as a habit.
  3. TRANGOLICERS: To make a person or an animal calmer or unconscious using a drug.
  4. AMPHETAMINE: a drug that stimulates the body and makes one feel alert and excited. Amphetamines are sometimes taken illegally.
  5. LAXATIVE: (a medicine, food or drink) a laxative or helping the bowels to employ
