THE PROBLEM OF POOR PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN BUSINESS STUDIES AT JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL (A CASE STUDY OF AJEROMI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA)
ABSTRACT
The study using Ajeromi local government area of Lagos state as a case study. Literatures were reviewed and hypotheses were used to source relevant information.
The responding sample comprised of 120 randomly selected people from four (4) selected schools in Ajeromi local government education, district: a questionnaire was used to collect the require information.
The study examined problem faced by performance in business studies programmers, which are insufficiency of fund, lack of provision of qualified teachers. Inadequate of teaching materials or aids, use of lecture method ate the expense of other teaching method, among others.
From the available data collected from the respondents, these findings were selected. Majority of the population sample agreed that inadequate provision of qualified teachers would influence on the performance of student in business studies.

1.0. INTRODUCTION
1.1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Business studies are the foundation of commercial education offered in secondary school. It includes subjects like type writing, shorthand etc.
These subjects provide various programmes designed to develop special competence in marketable business skills and techniques. They embrace specialized training and the orientation of which brings gainful employment and identification of skills, which might help young people understand the labour market
According to Nicholas (1999) is of the view that business studies is a type of training that will help to attain all the aim of education at any level of learning and has for it? Primary objectives preparing student to enter to a business corner and once entered into a corner to render them more efficient and help them to advance to higher level of employment.
It is very quite glaring that business studies as a subject in many of our secondary schools is confronted with problems, created by either the policy makers or the recipient of this type of education. The situation as it is today need a critical examination to be able to identify the real problem and proffer solution.
The successful implementation of business studies programme in our secondary school (both junior and senior school) depends largely on the availability of human and non-human resources, which are necessary for the programme. The need arises therefore to identify problems militating or affecting the poor performance of student in business studies in secondary school and proffer useful solutions to these identified problems.
1.2. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Business studies as a subject in junior secondary school is faced with pro9blems, which make the implementation of the curriculum very difficult. Business education has become a complexity that has given rise to many problems. These problems among other are, inadequate of teaching materials, over populated classroom, late payment of teachers salary, inadequate employment of qualified teaching personnel to teach the subject, inability to provide workshop and experts to up-grade available teacher, lack of fund lack of structure to accommodate the increasing member of students. These problems which have it negative effects on secondary schools will be looked into in this study.
1.3. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The study will look into problems affection the poor performance of students in business studies in Lagos state junior secondary schools and also suggest solution to the problem. The prospects of business studies in Nigeria will also be emphasized.
1.4. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The result of this study will provide a guide on how to attain effective implementation of business studies. It would as well point out to the government and policy makers the careers of weakness on the program implementation.
1.5. RESEARCH QUESTIONS
- Inadequate provision of teaching materials affect the performance of student in learning business student in Lagos state secondary schools

The study focuses mainly on the investigation on the problems facing the poor performance of students in business studies as well as problem faced by the business studies programme
1.8. DEFINITION OF TERMS
BUSINESS STUDIES: According to Nelson (2006) defines business studies as a study that combines accounting, economics, finance, marketing and organizational behaviour, he also said that, business studies is generally seen to be more theoretical, conceptual and academically more rigorous than the new vocational focused applied business.
TEACHER: A teacher is a person who impact or transfer knowledge to students or learners. Also a teacher is a key factor in the operation and success of curriculum
LEARNING: According to Mike Wills (2006) defines learning as the attention of behaviour as a result of individual experience also an observable and measurable change in behaviour that is the result of an experience.
SCHOOL: A school is an administrative unit dedicated to and designed to impact skills and knowledge to the students
PERFORMANCE: According to Graham (2006) he defines performance as and act of doing something successfully using knowledge as distinguished from mainly processing it or an experience been carving out carrying into action or execution.
