Chapter One

  • Background of the Study

According to Kagan and Meidow (2000) the word adult is difficult to define because “it varies from one society to another, and has changed over time”. The boundaries that determine who is considered an adult can depend on actions (i.e marriage age, age to begin to support the family, vote, drink, drive a car etc).

In collaboration with this view, Braimoh and Biao (1988) finds the word “adult” a vague concept and noted that although the Nigerian constitution views a person who is eighteen (18) years as an adult. It is not acceptable in many countries and communities in Nigeria.

Kelly and Parkett (1999) noted that although adulthood can be defined using developmental terms of experience and attitudes, different societies to associate adulthood with different characteristics.

Mariam webstar dictionary (2004) defines adult as a mature, fully developed person. An adult has reached the age when they are legally responsible for their actions. Adult is a person who by virtue of attaining a certain age, generally eighteen, is regarded in the eyes of the law as being able to manage his or her own affairs.

Aluko (2010). Biologically, an adult is a human or any other organism that has reached sexual maturity. In human context, the term adult additionally has meanings associated with social and legal concepts. In contrast to a “minor” a legal adult.

In similar vein, Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary of Meaning (2013) defines adult as a person who is fully grown and developed. Adult education reflects a specific philosophy about learning and teaching based on the assumption that adult can and wants to learn.

Adult education by UNESCO (2012) denotes the entire body of organized educational processes, whether content, level and methods, formal or otherwise, whether they prolong or replace initial education in schools, colleges and universities as well as in apprenticeship, whereby persons regarded as adult by the society to which they belong develop their abilities enrich their knowledge, improve their technical and professional qualifications or turn them in a new direction and brings about changes in their attitudes or behaviors.

Professor Babatunde Fafunwa on his philosophy of education has been emphasizing of formal, western- oriented education. For a more holistic and fundamental education system that emphasizes on flexibility and usefulness to the society. Professor Fafunwa sees education as the means to an end not an end in itself.

Professor Fafunwa will be best remembered for his advocacy of learning in our mother tongue with English as a second language during six years of primary education to deliver the students from the shackles of colonialism.

The term social political refers to a system composed of both social element and political element and the interaction between them. The idea of social political system is explicitly designed to focus ones attentions on the interaction between the social system and processes that involves elements of both, such processes cannot be fully interpreted by strictly focusing on their manifestation within the political realm. In that they have their origins within more fundamental social processes from which they cannot be fully separated.

It is of value to look at the whole of the social and the political realm as a single organization so as to identify and trace these interactions and processes. One of such example would be political movement. These process of change often originates in informal social groups that over time  galvanize into political movement in understanding such issues as racism, inequality or populism, it is revered to look not just at the political system itself but also cultural factors and social factors within the broader community. by system academy wikipedia.
