Everything in life, better expressed, every profession in life needs guidance, every crawling little child has to be taught, how to walk, and ever stuttering child has to be taught how to talk, the same scenario can be carried over to the importance of guidance services in an unstable and degenerating society like ours.

A civil engineering graduate that cannot mold a block and all these are fall out from wrong choice of course at the post primary level. Majority of dysfunction graduate are talented in one way or the other and they allow such talents to wallow away.

The intentions of guidance services are; to help individuals to understand themselves and their world. These services also assist authorities/teachers in understanding the individuals better and hence be better prepared to derive maximum benefits from those who go through the experience of guidance services.

The government has also added its voice to the significance of guidance services in schools, by making a policy statement that career officers and counselors would be appointed in post primary institutions and government would continue to make provision for the training of interested teachers in guidance and counselling. Some studies have been carried out on guidance services.

According to Ikegbuman (2000) students do not know of the opportunities open to them in the world of work. Other students by Egbile and Egwuyanga (2001) have found that group counselling can improve student’s academic performance.
