Abstract
Christian Religious Studies is an academic discipline taught at the various levels of our educational system. Its main objective is to produce a community of people who are morally and spiritually developed for the wellbeing of the society in general. Self-Esteem on the other hand is individual positive nature which are taught rigorously by Christian Religious Studies. This Research work is set to elucidates the concept of self-esteem and how its affects the academic performance of Christian Religious Studies Students.
Background to study
Empirical evidence indicates that self- esteem is a fairly good predictor of mental health in adults and adolescents (Rosenberg 2010). In addition, high self- esteem has been positively correlated with creativity, academic achievement, resistance to group pressure, willingness to express unpopular opinions and effective communication between parents and youth (Adair, 2000).
Many investigators have explored the association between self- esteem and various social and psychological problems.
Kaplan, 2004 review of this literature concludes that there are significant relationships between low self-esteem and delinquency, crime, alcoholism, drug abuse, mental disorders, aggressive behavior, and suicidal behaviour.
Pokorny, 2010 concluded that there is a significant between self-esteem and school performance on students studying Christian Religious Studies in tertiary schools is primarily attributable to the effect of school performance on self-esteem (Vik 2003).
Typically, academic achievement has been strongly related to self-esteem: many studies have demonstrated significant positive relationships between these variables.
Self-esteem is the totality of one’s self evaluation, it is a cognitive process of evaluating one’s ability, values, knowledge and overall capacity. People who are perceived with positive self-esteem demonstrated the following signs:
- Confidence
- Self- direction
- Non – blaming others
- Demonstrates personal strength
- Optimism
- Able to solve problems
- Ability to control emotions
The uniqueness of Christian religious studies emerges from its dual function of simultaneous development of the intellectual ability and moral character of the students. Okafor (1996) said that Christian religious studies helps to inject sanity into the society and minimize the turning of a nation into a policed state by cultivating citizens who acknowledge metaphysical sanctions, whose acceptable behaviours are often determined not just by external constraints but by spiritual consideration.
Poor performance occurs every year and more students are running away from the subject of Christian Religious Studies This alarming rate of poor performance in Christian Religious Studies has generated growing concern from various quarters, the parents, teachers, schools and the government (Lawal, 2002, Lawal2010).
Christian Religious Studies is designed to compel interests to beget habits and to influence behaviours. On the whole religious studies makes one truly a citizen of his nation by indicating in him the required civic responsibilities. The civic aim is summarized by Akubure (1992) as “Give your country the best service of your citizenship.”
On the other hand, there seems to be a connection between the attitudes of students regarding learning of Christian religious studies and their academic performance, sometimes students develop negative attitude to a subject due to some factors associated with the teachers and vice versa.
Either way, it hinders student performance, findings indicate that:
- Self-Esteem on students studying Christian Religious Studies and their perceptions of the Social quality of their relationship with peers was found to have significantly increased.
- Academic Self-Esteem perception of ability to succeed academically decreased slightly for the experimental group.
- Parental Self-Esteem perceptions of how their parents view them slightly increase for experimental group.
- General Self-Esteem overall perception of their worth was found to have significantly increased for the experimental control group.
