REPORT ON THE NEXUS BETWEEN DISCIPLINE AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE (A CASE STUDY OF SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ALIMOSHO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE)
ABSTRACT
Students are priceless assets and most essential elements in education. It is absolutely necessary to direct students to exhibit acceptable attitude and behavior within and outside the school. In an attempt to achieve an organized and peaceful school environment and maintain law and order, school management specifies rules and regulations to guide the activities of members of educational organization. Student discipline is a prerequisite to almost everything a school has to offer student. Discipline is the culture and climate of the school. In order for a satisfactory climate to exist within a school a certain level of discipline must exist. In schools where discipline is a serious problem, for example, where student bully others, parents can transfer their children to better schools. And because the well behaved usually perform well, their transfer can affect the overall performance of that school. Therefore, the study looks at causes and nature of indiscipline and how it models our students’ attitude. It also gives attention for the role of parents, teachers and religious bodies in maintaining discipline so as to cultivate good attitude on the part of our student. Finally the project gives required recommendation that will help educationists in maintaining positive attitude to enhance discipline in our schools.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Students are priceless assets and most essential elements in education. It is absolutely necessary to direct students to exhibit acceptable attitude and behaviour within and outside the school. In an attempt to achieve an organized and peaceful school environment and maintain law and order, school management specify rules and regulations to guide the activities of members of the educational organization.
Students discipline is a prerequisite to almost everything a school has to offer students (self and vocabulary 2002). Self and vocabulary further link discipline with both the culture and climate of the school thus, in order for a satisfactory climate to exist within a school, a certain level of discipline must exist. In schools where discipline is a serious problem, for example, where students bully other parents can transfer their children to better schools. And because the well behaved usually perform (Rigby 2000), their transfer can affect the overall academic performance of that school.
Students’ misbehaviour is a prevailing problem affecting school and even academic performance of students across many nations around the world.
Students’ misconduct in the classroom interferes with teaching and learning and it’s thought to be precaution to later school dropout and similar negative social outcomes. Students’ behavioural problems are also thought to be a learning contributor to teachers’ stress and attrition. Serious breaches of school discipline policy can have profound negative effects on teachers.
One of the most widespread reasons for bad discipline however, is usually a student’s inability to cope with the task. The noisiest students will demonstrate their frustration by loud outburst, disruptive behaviour, while the rest of the class may remain passive (Sternburg R.J & Williams, W.W 2002).
Serious breaches of school discipline policy include assault by student on teachers and other students, verbal abuse, offensive language against teachers and other students, sexual and other forms of harassment, treat and intimidation of teachers and other students, possessing offensive weapons, supplying of illegal drugs, intrusions into the school or classrooms by adults with the intention of confronting teachers have become a case of study that needed immediate attention.
As the problem now is rather alarming and jeopardizing the administration of the secondary schools performance of students academically and the believe that findings of the study will emit some powerful rays of light to rectify the situation.
1.2 Statement of the Study
The purpose of this study is to identify the students discipline problems such as truancy, absenteeism, stealing, bullying, and fighting among the secondary school students in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State based on the effect over their academic performance.
Indiscipline in schools is certainly a matter of immediate concern to the teaching profession. Ensuring discipline in school should be the concern of everyone.
One of the salient factors that attributes to the problem is peer group influence. Negative attitude of their friends such as irresponsibility, in-cooperation, time management, disrespecting adult, disobeying rules and regulations are some of the contributing factors from the peer group for the prevailing problems.
The good reputation and fame of most secondary schools have been dented and image tarnished. People no longer have trust and confidence in students. Most universities and polytechnics conduct test for successful students even after passing their examinations.
It is very important that the school management should play a dominant role to ensure that all the students perform well not only in academics but also in good behavior to avoid negative impact.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The broad aim of this study is to examine how discipline affects the academic performance of senior secondary school students. To achieve the above aim therefore, the following objectives will be my guide.
- To identify the dominant factor contributing to the discipline problem such as peer group influence, family, teachers and school environment.
- To identify the significant difference between students discipline problem among the student with the educational level of the parents.
- To identify the significant difference between students discipline problems with their academic achievement.
1.4 Significant of the Study
The study intends to identify the impact of school discipline on the academic performance of secondary school students in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The assumption that the school system is besieged with a lot of indiscipline among the teachers and the students is central to this study.
Evaluate the attitude of students to alcoholism, disobedience, examination malpractices, forgery, cigarette smoking and strike demonstration as well as bullying and stealing. Discipline problem of our youths need a decisive attention of the society at large. We need to examine critically how it affects the academic performance of students.
1.5 Research Questions
The questions to be handled in this study would include the following:
- Is the student attitude towards truancy encourages students academic performance.
- Absenteeism of student brings about poor performance of student academics.
- Stealing has nothing to do with the academic performance of the student.
- Dangerous fighting among students contributes to low academic performance of senior secondary school students.
- Peer group influence promotes the academic performance of secondary school students.
- Research Hypothesis
- There is no significant relationship between student educational problems with their academic performance.
- There is no significant difference between students discipline such as peer group influence with academic performance.
- There is no significant difference between students discipline problem such as truancy with their academic achievement.
- There is no significant difference between students discipline problem such as absenteeism with their academic performance.
- There is no significant difference between students discipline problem such as stealing with their academic performance.
1.7 Scope or Delimitation of the Study
This study shall be limited to Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State specifically the senior secondary school students in some selected schools.
This study is limited due to the economic recession of the country, which affects the entire sundry also time factor is another barrier. The method of data collection shall be based on questionnaire.
1.8 Definition of Terms
Discipline: It refers to as a systematic instruction given to a student, discipline means to instruct a person to follow a particular code of conduct.
Performance: It is the learning outcome of student after undergoing a course and being tested to know the level of understanding.
Senior secondary: This is the upper class of the secondary school. It is the stage of conclusion of secondary school education and it lasted for three years.
