CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Nations of the world especially the third world countries Latin America, Asia and Africa strive for development, most developed country usually ensure the around plan to develop of key sector of the economics, such sector include Educational sector, health and manufacturing sector etc. yet development should not be perceived as a purely economic phenomenon. It is in the view of Todaro (1977:82) a multi-dimensional process involving the re-organization, re-orientation and re-invigoration of the entire economic and social system.
In the Nigeria context, Nigeria manufacturing sector in comparative regional and global perspectives. The share of manufacturing value added in GNP in most emerging countries ranged between 20 and 40 percent in recent years, with this the manufacturing sector play a significant role in Nigeria economic growth. As such, the Agricultural sector will serve a variable instrument for improving manufacturing sector in Nigeria. For an instance, in china, it was over 40 percent in 2010. Manufacturing expanded rapidly in these countries in the last two decade. That is the Bench mark that domestics manufacturing must aspire to achieve for it to play the much desired role of the catalysts in the country’s quest to move from poverty to middle level and overall economic prosperity depends much on the robustness of the manufacturing sector and its linkages with the domestic economy. That much is evident in world economic history, especially the merging market that are rapidly challenging that develop economics of the western world. The important role of the Agricultural sector towards manufacturing sector in unlocking economic prosperity is well known most recently from the Asia economic miracle driven by industrial growth.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The poor performance of the Nigeria manufacturing sector is evident of poor output and productivity in Agricultural sector of the economy. The magnitude of the difference between Nigeria and other countries is quite obvious, the manufacturing sector of countries is quite staggering. The manufacturing sector will contribute 15-18 percent share of the GDP with three years, only certain policies are put in place. Various problems has been identified to have cause poor performance such include; ineffective policies to reform the sector, poor Agricultural productivity, political and economic instability etch it is disheartening that the country with abundant wealth of natural resources which are inherited wealth as failed to transform the wealth to productive wealth instead, it has continue to ship wealth across the Atlantic ocean, creating job and wealth else where will be reversed.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The following are the purpose for the study:
- To examine the significant role of manufacturing sector towards the economy development.
- To find out if there exist linkage between the Agricultural sector and the manufacturing sector.
- To examine if manufacturing sector contribute huge percentage to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.
- To find out the problems that hinders both the Agricultural and manufacturing sector.
- To find out if sustainable manufacturing sector (performance) will attract foreign investors.
1.4 Research Questions
- What are the roles of manufacturing sector towards the development of the economy?
- Is there any linkage between the Agricultural sector and Manufacturing sector?
- To what extent has manufacturing sector contributed to the Gross Domestic product of the country?
- To what extent has the problem encounter in Agricultural sector affect the manufacturing process/output?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Ho1: There is no significant relationship between the manufacturing sector Productivity and Agricultural sector transformation.
Ho2: The role of manufacturing sector will not significantly determine the rate of employment generation in Nigeria.
Ho3: The effectiveness level of manufacturing sector will not significantly determine the rate of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.
1.6 Significant of the Study
Manufacturing Sector in any country play a significant role in the development of all other sector, as such one might be interested to ask why the researcher focus on the finding and examining the important role of Agricultural sector in re-invigorating the manufacturing sector and examining manufacturing role in the development of the economy. Thus it is clear that present trend in the society requires one to acquire (individual) knowledge in order to be able to fit into the dynamic society of ours and learn to be self reliance as there are bound of challenges in our everyday life according to global dictates, hence the study will be important to reveal the means that the individual, government and individual stakeholders can take to reduce problems of the agricultural sector. Moreover, increase in the importation of foreign goods which has an adverse effects in the economy.
1.7 Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The research work will be limited in scope to manufacturing sector (industries) in Lagos State. Thus the scope will cover some selected manufacturing company in two selected local Government of Lagos State. The Industries will be selected randomly for the bases of generalization thereafter the finding.
