CHAPTER ONE

1.0    INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Absenteeism is the main problem among secondary school students in developing countries. The fact is that most parents want the best education for their wards, but not all students or wards are willing to embrace their parents’ imbibitions for them.

Despite their parents’ responsibility to give them sound and best education, they (students) still found themselves as an enemy of education; This emerged as a result of dropout of school aimlessly, having no tangible reasons neither they have permission from school authorities.

Some students are absent from school even when their parents do not grant them their consent.

Some students are also absent from school with the parent’s consent for one reason and others. Therefore, practicing such actions with the parent’s consent or the student deliberately staying out of school is called “Truancy”.

A truant, therefore, deliberately absents himself from school without consent from the parent, teachers, or any delegated authorities and without justifiable reasons while the act indulged in it is called “truancy”.

The economic background of some families tremendously helps some students in playing “truancy” this happens as a result of the low economic background of the family; although the parents, in this case, are delighted in education, they find it very difficult to give the children best education, due to their states of poverty which leads to the lack of fund. Children or students from such families would not value education; even when they do, their punctuality in school will be low.

Another aspect in which family background affects a student’s life is the home where the student found him/herself. Some homes that have no interest in education affect the student’s academic performance by sending the children to learn a trade as an apprentice even when the children have no level of education.

Some parents or home send their children to school, but with no book as a reference for the student to be guided, all these are the resources of truancy.

Truants are the children who absent themselves from school voluntarily or involuntarily. Those who are voluntary in these actions typically drop out of school in order to slip away alone or with others; they roam the street and also take shelter in a friend’s house without loving any emotional distress; these acts are popularly called “GROUP TRUANCY” Some truants attend school to mark his/her name present in the attendant register after their names have been marked, they have the mind of going out of the school before closing period, which may not be discovered for a while, some truants may not come or attend school at all.

Therefore, there is a need for the students/parents to help identify and proffer solutions to these quality-disturbing problems that could lead to students dropping out of school, known as “TRUANCY.”

1.2    STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The rate at which the students roam about the street aimlessly even with their uniforms on, the way they feel unconcerned about the increase in juvenile crime, the drastic rate at which students drop out of school, the incessant report, and the gross unemployment in the nation call for concern, as all these and others problems are the end product of truancy.

Achievement of secondary education goals extremely depends on the positive education to academic work by students and the instructional performance of teachers.

The continuous existence of poor academic performance in the external examination, dropout, absenteeism, lateness, and drug abuse among secondary school students is a major task facing educational administrators, which warrants consideration for they are the source of truancy.
