CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The origin of poetry can be traced to the beginning of human existence. Evidently the first poem was composed following the creation of the first woman: ‘ This is at last bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh, this one shall be called woman because from man this one was taken. (Genesis 2:23-24), New Word Translation of the Holy Scriptures. Modern poetry however has undergone lots of changes over the years, making it a medium through which the realities are being revealed. To a poet, poetry is not just a source of livelihood, neither is it just for aesthetic pleasure, it is a powerful weapon for bringing about change. The language of poetry is figurative and noble and when read with deep insight, it can change an individual, a society, a nation and the world at large. Over the years, poets have taken advantage of the transformation power in poetry to contribute their quota in bringing about societal, political, environmental, and even economic change. One of such poet is Shelly Mont Blanc. In writing the poem, ‘Ode to the west wind’, Shelly employs the use of strong metaphor, comparing the west wind to an agent for change. Even as it destroys, the wind encourages new life on earth and social progress amongst humanity. In addition, Shelly Mont Blanc’s ‘The status of Ozymandias’ also symbolizes political tyranny. That the statue is broken into pieces and stranded in an empty desert, suggest that tyranny is temporary and that no political leader, particularly an unjust one can hope to have lasting power or real influence.

Another famous poet who has fought wars with poetry is Olaide Tanure. His collection of poems which include: Delta Blues and Home Song; The Tale of the Harmattan; and Day Dream of the Ant are all illustrations of ecocritical literature. Commenting on his works, he writes, “Literature has to draw attention to increasing gap between the haves and the have-nots. Literature gap becomes a weapon against the denial of basic human rights.” (Olaide 1996).

This research work however discusses how poetry can be used as a weapon for change using some selected poems in Akachi Adimora Ezeigbo’s Dancing Masks as a background to the study.
