CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The indigenes of Ipokia are basically ANAGOS and most of the student that attend their secondary schools are mostly Anagos and Egos.
Although, the people of Ipokia local Government Area continue to cherish the mode of socialization used by their ancestors, it appear that the coming of their ways of life such as Christianity, Islam western culture and formal education has resulted into fragmented modes of socialization. The connotation is that children of the area seem to grow into adulthood with Myriad married problems.
Some problem encountered by the people of Ipokia Local Government Area appears to have resulted from inconsistent or inadequate family life or sex education.
The traditional and formal forms of education seem to be in conflict and very often traditional value appears to be neglected by formal education without adequate substitutes.
GIbba (2005) and Fafunwa (2006) provide some facts from which the present apparently inadequate family life education among the people or Ipokia Local Government Area may be deduced.
Thus, traditionally, every wife in the area expected her husband to sleep with her frequently so that she may conceive because of the honour in the number of children one has. Nevertheless, parents would want to remain childless instead of having children who will bring shame and dishonour to the family.
The degree of ignorance attached to ill- manner of acts by the students is likely to bring disrespects to the family is manifested in the several physical punishment generally, meted out to young offender in the hope of molding them toward the right direction.
Character training is the corner- stone of traditional education among the people of Ipokia Local Government Area. However, the end objectives are to produce an individual who is honest, respectful, skilled, cooperative and conforms to the social order of the community. In order to achieve such objectives parents, sibling, and other member of education.
If a boy and girl have intimacy, any member of the extended family might thresh both of them on the spot, report the matter to the parent or the children or bring it to the notice of the head of the family for proper punishment to the administrated. Thus, the child obtains the basic foundations of education as a member of the group from his or her family.
In the traditional education among the people of Ipokia Local Government Area, Children were taught what they needed to known in terms of the social expectation of the boys and girl, men and women. It was comparatively easier because children usually live with their parent until they get married, Their behaviour is under the direct security of parents and other member of the family.
Today, as a result of formal education and new economics situation, children may leave their parent to school and later seek for employment in towns or environment away from where the parent live. When such a situation occurs, the sex related education given traditionally to the children either seizes to operate or receive inadequate attention in term of necessary modification.
Basically, formal education in Ipokia Local Government Area is
expected to take over or continue with the up bringing of the children in that Area. However, the situation seems to be such that students in the secondary schools do not have adequate information and are not enlightened on matter that affects them socially. The tendency that students indulge in sexual deviance is higher.
Most of the children in secondary schools of Ipokia Local Government Area are biologically mature, some of them attain the age of puberty a year or two before they start their secondary education while others attain such age in their first year in secondary schools.
Some educated people in the Local Government Area appear to favour the teaching of education as a means of alleviating or obviating sex related problems among the people of the area in general and the youth in particular. Nevertheless, it appear that some parent and other in the area are against the teaching of such a subject in the schools.
1.2 Statement of the Problems
The Major problem is that children in Ipokia Local Government Area do not seem to have adequate knowledge of sex education and solutions to sex related problem, People of the local Government Area too have divided opinions about the teaching of sex education. Nevertheless, there has not been any study on sex education in the area, so some parent view that children should not be taught sex education at all. They argued that they learn about it by any way which could be dangerous to them. This was supported by Roger (2004) that claimed that sex education can be learnt through parents, reading novels, Magazines as well as film friend which may be dangerous to the adolescents.
