CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION
    • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

According to National Council Mathematics Teacher (2000) “Technology is essential in teaching and learning mathematics, it influences students’ learning. Teachers attitudes play an important role in using technology in teaching and learning mathematics. It is very important to improve teachers’ attitude toward using computers in the classroom because it may enhance mathematics teaching and learning. However, many pre-services and in-services teacher lack technology in the classroom.

In Nigeria, mathematics has occupied a greater percentage of science subject. A science teacher in secondary school cannot be said to have graduated if he/she has not obtained minimum credit in almost all the science subjects including mathematics which is a compulsory subject, not only for science student alone but for all students. Moreso, before a student can be admitted to any higher institution in Nigeria, such students regardless of his/her course must have at least a credit in mathematics.

It is one thing for one to understand a subject, and it is another thing for one to know how to apply such knowledge in the practical aspect or in a real life process. So before one can understand how to apply the subject, one must first know its usefulness.

Mathematics is a subject that can be taught by knowledgeable teachers that can apply the use of technology, such as calculator, computer, project etc. For effective teaching and learning of the subject.

The missing role of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics has resulted into major educational problems, which can be easily averted, if the necessary ideas, precaution and educational facilities has been made available onto the students as part of the programme of teaching and learning system of mathematics.

A research like mental analysis for example has investigated on the input of computer assisted instruction (CAI) on student learning outcome Lipsey & Nilson (1993) in CAI the computer services as a medium of instruction and information delivery system. The computers in this form can take the role of an instructor a teacher which can introduce and present lessons. They obtain, guides, assess, record and score learners’ response. With the introduction of CAI the teacher has lesser job to do on like the traditional way of teaching where by the teacher have to do almost all the teaching job and the students just sit back and watch their teacher demonstrating the entirely lesson, with they having little or no meaningful to contribute.

As a result of this, the study on the student of technology in the teaching and learning of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics is worth pursuing. It is hoped that the result of this study will provide evidence as to the effect of technology in the teaching of mathematics as an important steps towards the better performance of students in mathematics.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study examines the effect of technology on the teaching and learning of mathematics, the research would look also to the extent to which improperly or implementation of technology has affect our students. Since both the knowledgeable teacher and his/her skillfulness in the application of technology depend to a large extent affect his/her delivery positively, the effect of technology in teaching mathematics will surely be to guide and lead students to have an outstanding performance in the subject mathematics.

  • PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

In every activities in life, there is no one without a purpose. Many researches have been carried out the failure of students in mathematics. The improper use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics have really affected the student, which has led to mass failure in mathematics.

The purpose of this study is to find out the influence of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics and to recommend its positive effect to the teaching and learning of mathematics.

  • RESEARCH QUESTIONS

To facilitate the investigation on the study, the following research questions are to be addressed:

  1. To what extent is technology importation the teaching and learning of mathematics to the students?
  2. Is technology important to the teaching and learning of mathematics?
  3. What will the school authority, teachers, students, parents and the society gain from the use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics?
  4. Is the cost of maintaining technological facilitator of teaching and learning of mathematics more expensive than the advantages derived from them?
  5. Will the operation of technological equipment as effect on time available for the lesson?
  • RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
Read also:  COMPARISON OF THE PERFORMANCE OF PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS IN ALIMOSHO LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The following hypothesis will be authenticated for the purpose of investigation

  1. There is no significant relationship between technology and teaching of mathematics
  2. There is no significant different between student that are taught mathematics not using technology and those taught with base method technology
  3. There is no significant gain by the school authority, teacher, student, parents and society at large if technology is introduced to the teaching of mathematics
  4. The cost of maintaining technological facilitators is not significantly more expensive than the advantages derived from it
  5. The operation of technological equipment in the mathematics class has no significant effect on the time available for the lesson
  • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this study will provide basis for effective use of technology (by teacher) in the teaching of mathematics to modify or reinforce student attitude toward mathematics, it is also believed that the research study is important as the outcome of this study with concrete analysis on the interpretation of technology and it various impact on the teaching of mathematics this will benefits the school authority, teacher, students, parents and society at large.

The finding of this study will provide for their research on the effect of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

  • SCOPE/DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study only focuses on the effect of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics and it is limited to the schools at Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos state.

It would have covered the entire state but as a result of time, resources and financial constraint.
