INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) AS A TOOL FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING
ABSTRACT
The research work examines the relevance of information and communication technology (ICT) a tool for effective teaching and learning, a case study of Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State, four hypothesis were formulated with twenty (20) statement on the questionnaires which was distributed to five (5) schools, simple percentage was used to analyze results of the study. From the result, it was discovered that ICT examines the types of support, training and environment that facilitates the effective integration for the successful teaching and learning of business studies in secondary schools. The results also indicate that teachers are making substantial progress in their transition towards teaching in an ICT rich environment.
CHAPTER ONE
Introduction
Background of the study
The global trend is wheeling round focusing and emphasizing the use of information and communication technology (I.C.T) in all work or life (Arolasafe 2004) will his development stated that more and more Nigeria schools especially those in the urban area are acquiring knowledge of computers and putting them to use for instructions record keeping and other application like Microsoft excel, power point and word processing. Education is not left out of this wave of change. Most of the development countries have exploited the potentials of I.C.T to transform their educational landscape at the tertiary, secondary and primary school levels particularly in the instructional process.
Generally, I.C.T holds out the opportunity to revolutionalize pedagogical methods, expand access to qualify education and improve the management of educational system (Word Bank, 2002:34). This is more so science, technology and in teaching and learning of business studies. Thus a more acceptable definition of business studies by Paul Challagban (1994) defined business studies as the process of exposing or teaching the learner about the organization that is formed to produce and supply goods and services to satisfy the need of people for the betterment of their immediate society and nation at large.
Arolasafe, 2004 defined business studies as the study of all commercial subject as well as all commercial subjects related to business activities.
It is pertinent therefore, to sustain the achievement of universal primary education for all boys and girls in our nation, teaching and learning of business studies must be well planned, developmentally appropriate, structures in a way that will motivate and to make them good citizens for their nations. Above all, learning of business studies instruction must be integrated into the information and communication technology (I.C.T) system.
According to Dauda 2004 the information has clearly arrived consequently the educational use of computer technology is picking up. Duncombe and Heeks (1999) defined ICT as the electronic means of capturing, processing, storing and dissemination information so as to change the scope, pace, range as well as the procedure in which information is delivered in the world today.
Arolasafe (2004) view information and communication technology in the following perspective.
Information facts or details about something communication is the principle of transforming information and the method by which it is delivered (as print or radio or television etc) Technology is the practical application of science and art of science of applying scientific knowledge to practical problem.
In a nutshell, ICT is not limited to computer application only, it includes internet, newsprint etc. Information and communication are integral part of human society historically through those that have gone, through changes and of most recent are the technological innovations which further enriched the spend of communication culminating into digital technology. In view of the above, this project focuses an appraisal of information and communication technology in improving the performance of teachers in the teaching and learning of the subject business studies.
Statement of the problem
The challenges facing business studies education and science teaching at the various levels still remain the old conservation approach with characteristics. Such as: The teacher in most cases acts as the person who has prepared to performed the knowledge and the students the dormant recipients, the over reliance on textbooks and the occasional demonstration and experimental classes. If this situation would change there is need for diagnostics study that will help in better direction in efforts. So that the performance of students in teaching and learning business studies and other science subject will be improved.
Purpose of the study
The purpose of this research work is to appraise how information and communication technology can improve the performance of the teachers in teaching i.e school in Badagry Local Government Area. It will also give details possible ways of ICT use in the school system that twill increase teaching and learning generally, especially the business studies subjects.
