IMPORTANCE OF ICT TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENT IN BUSINESS STUDIES

ABSTRACT

The focus of the study on the impact of information and communication technology on academic performance of student in senior secondary school. The researcher opened that communication and information technology contribute immensely to the life of the senior secondary school students and in other areas. It was not given a proper attention in academic performance especially in senior secondary school. The researcher adopted a descriptive design while the population comprises of staffs and students of some selected secondary schools in Ojo Local Government area of Lagos State, which are selected randomly. To acquire this purpose research question and hypotheses were put forward. HO1: There is no significant difference between the implementation of information and communication technology in academic performance in secondary school effectiveness. HO2: There is no significant difference between the implementation of information and communication technology on the impact of academic performance and improvement in the study ability of the student. HO3: There is no significant difference between the full implementation of information and communication technologies in standard of living of students. The researcher hereby recommend the that teachers should be encouraged to teach with ICT facilities so as to facilitate effective academic performance of students, government should allocate adequate funds to information and communication technology project on all secondary schools, ministry of education and local government authority need to provide internet, cafes and education resources centres and encourage students to use them to make their academic performance effective. Lastly, creation of the most conducive education environment for using information and communication technology should be paramount in government policies and their implementation so as to maximize the benefits of information and communication technology.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0.     INTRODUCATION

1.1.     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Academic performance has been said to be a systematic presentation on how will a student in accomplishing his/her tasks and studies, but there are quite a number of factors that determines the level and quality of student academic performance grades, attendance, standardized tests and extracurricular activities.

The decision to work on the impact of information and communication technology on students academic performance is as a result of personal interest on how information and communication technologies can enhance performances  in secondary schools if properly used (centre for research on information and communication technologies and organization 199, EDNA, 199 White 1999).

Although education has a poor history of successfully meeting the challenges of major slift in information and communication technologies. It is generally coming up. There has been far too little research into the implementation and communication technologies rich academic environment (Trinded, 2000).

So therefore, the research work as part of the larger study investigated hos information and communication technologies can effectively enhance the performance of senior secondary school environments.

The term academic performance should be used along with side with learning as to balance the performance usage time.

1.2.     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Even though, information and communication technologies has done a great and wonderful things in other areas, it was not given a proper attention in academic performance. The inadequate implementation of the use of information and communication technologies as expected has cause a great damage than good to the academic performance in secondary school and the ability of the learner that ought to be enhanced to it maximum capabilities has been left with little or no concern which has resulted into has performance of the students in their respective discipline.

If this advancement in information and communication technologies can be maintained and kept in place with advancement in academic performance in senior secondary school students.

1.3.     RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research question were raised in order to have vivid understanding of research problem.

The following questions were proposed by the researcher.

  1. What are the attitude of teachers towards the judicious use of information and communication technologies in academic performance of secondary school?
  2. How adequate are the services rendered through information and communication technologies in academic performance in secondary school level?
  3. What are the general attitude of students towards the use of information and communication technologies in academic performance in students?

1.4.     RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

The research hereby proposes the following hypotheses for the purpose of gathering information for the study;

1.4.     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of this research is to evaluate the importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on  academic performance of senior secondary school.

The purpose of the study includes the following;

  1. To find out the importance of information and communication technologies on academic performance in senior school
  2. To know the impact of training level of the teachers in the use of computer
  3. To examine what extent information and communication technologies have helped to improve the productivity in academic performance in secondary school.

1.5.     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The importance of the research is to renew the impact of information and communication technologies on academic performance help in improving the productivity of performance. It will be of great value to the academic section and the educational administrator in general.

It would also be a great advantage to the teacher in that, it would show them the various ways in which they could supplement and have the effective in academic with information and communication technologies.

1.6.     DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The research study is restricted to the Ojo Local Government area of Lagos State. Due to lack of time and the necessary resources to go found all the Local Government in Lagos state.

1.7.     DEFINITION OF KEY WORDS AND TERMS

ICT:     (Information and Communication Technology) as an electronic means of capturing processing string and disseminating information.

Performance: Business dictionary defined performance as the accomplishment of a given task measured against present known standards of accuracy completeness, cost and speed. It is also an act of staying or presenting a play concert in other form .

Impact: Oxford Dictionary defined  impact as the powerful effect that something
