IMPACT OF FAMILY BACKGROUND AND TRUANCY ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the impact of family background and truancy on the academic performance of secondary school students.

The entire study comprises five chapters: Introduction, review of related literature, methodology, result and data analysis and discussion of research findings, summary and conclusion, implication, and recommendations.

Chapter one of the study deals with the essential aspect of the study. It exposes the world of students concerning their different types of homes and how it affects the rate of truancy among them.

The rate at which students get involved in truancy and the role in which their home background plays in it, how truancy affects their academic performance, and the effect of small, large, and moderate family size in truancy.

Chapter two of the study deals with literature reviews, psychologists, and text. Who has at one time the other carried out studies relating to this field of study?

Chapter three deals with the methodology of data gathering for the investigation. This study adopted the summary research approach where respondents were asked direct questions.

The researcher also makes use of questionnaires intending to obtain relevant data.

Chapter four of the study analyzed the data and results obtained. It also summarized the findings and discussion.

Chapter five deals with the summary, conclusion, implication, and recommendations.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0    INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Absenteeism is the main problem among secondary school students in developing countries. The fact is that most parents want the best education for their wards, but not all students or wards are willing to embrace their parents’ imbibitions for them.

Despite their parents’ responsibility to give them sound and best education, they (students) still found themselves as an enemy of education; This emerged as a result of dropout of school aimlessly, having no tangible reasons neither they have permission from school authorities.

Some students are absent from school even when their parents do not grant them their consent.

Some students are also absent from school with the parent’s consent for one reason and others. Therefore, practicing such actions with the parent’s consent or the student deliberately staying out of school is called “Truancy”.

A truant, therefore, deliberately absents himself from school without consent from the parent, teachers, or any delegated authorities and without justifiable reasons while the act indulged in it is called “truancy”.

The economic background of some families tremendously helps some students in playing “truancy” this happens as a result of the low economic background of the family; although the parents, in this case, are delighted in education, they find it very difficult to give the children best education, due to their states of poverty which leads to the lack of fund. Children or students from such families would not value education; even when they do, their punctuality in school will be low.

Another aspect in which family background affects a student’s life is the home where the student found him/herself. Some homes that have no interest in education affect the student’s academic performance by sending the children to learn a trade as an apprentice even when the children have no level of education.

Some parents or home send their children to school, but with no book as a reference for the student to be guided, all these are the resources of truancy.

Truants are the children who absent themselves from school voluntarily or involuntarily. Those who are voluntary in these actions typically drop out of school in order to slip away alone or with others; they roam the street and also take shelter in a friend’s house without loving any emotional distress; these acts are popularly called “GROUP TRUANCY” Some truants attend school to mark his/her name present in the attendant register after their names have been marked, they have the mind of going out of the school before closing period, which may not be discovered for a while, some truants may not come or attend school at all.

Therefore, there is a need for the students/parents to help identify and proffer solutions to these quality-disturbing problems that could lead to students dropping out of school, known as “TRUANCY.”

1.2    STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The rate at which the students roam about the street aimlessly even with their uniforms on, the way they feel unconcerned about the increase in juvenile crime, the drastic rate at which students drop out of school, the incessant report, and the gross unemployment in the nation call for concern, as all these and others problems are the end product of truancy.

Achievement of secondary education goals extremely depends on the positive education to academic work by students and the instructional performance of teachers.

The continuous existence of poor academic performance in the external examination, dropout, absenteeism, lateness, and drug abuse among secondary school students is a major task facing educational administrators, which warrants consideration for they are the source of truancy.

1.3    PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This research aims to clarify how the types of home (monogamous, polygamous, and family size) influence the students to play truancy in our institution of learning. It is also to bring into limelight the impact of other factors within and outside the students like poverty, broken home, physical and mental ability for inadequacy for common tasks of the child that could lead to truancy among students.

This study aims to evaluate the importance of home background, socio-economic status of the parents, and parental attitudes towards truancy among students.

The reason given by students for involving in truancy and their home background will also be compared in this study.

1.4    RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. To what extent has the home background of a student influenced him to play truancy?
  2. Is there any significant relationship between the home of the student and truancy?

iii. Would there be any significant difference between the rate of involvement in the truancy of the male and female students?

1.5    STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS

HO1 There will be no significant relationship between the home background of a student and truancy.

HO2 There will be no significant relationship between i.he family size of a student and truancy.

HO3 There will be no significant difference between the rate of involvement in the truancy of the male and female students.

1.6    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research work would make it possible for the student’s acts of indiscipline, known as truancy, to be reduced among our students.

The study would also create awareness for the parents as to the factors which prompt those factors in their homes that could lead to truancy and how to help their children better stay off truancy.

This study will be of immense help for the school curriculum planners to carry out those activities that would be more interesting and motivate the students to stay in the school positively.

Daily activities of the school would be carried out so that it would be scoreless for the students to run away from school.

The study would also be of tremendous help for the juvenile crime rate among the students to be reduced and enhances the government’s increased workforce.

1.7    LIMITATION

The study is limited to some selected secondary schools in Badagry Local Government of Lagos State, as it is impossible to cover the whole State and Nation due to the vastness of the state and the nation.

1.8    DELIMITATION

The study focused mainly on students’ attitudes toward truancy in some selected secondary schools of Badagry Local Government Area in Lagos State.
