CHAPTER ONE
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Home factor is an important factor to be considered when considering the students activities in academics.
According to oxford learner dictionary seventh edition 1997 home factor is used to refer to a family living together and the way it behaves with this, it should be an issue which deserves closer investigation in order to assess its real worth. Therefore, the present attempt is to study the effect of home and the environment on the academic activities of students.
In Nigeria today there is the need for the government (Federal and State to ensure proper and sound upbringing of children which may either make or mar their future. Many home are lagging behind in providing basic needs for their children which is attributed to the poor economic status of the country
Many of the parents now because of the government policy of free education refuse to complement government effort. This can be linked with the incessant strike or skeletal service of the teacher.
However, some parents also do not see the need to improve and supply the basic learning materials facilities to their children which is due to the wrong notion and misconception that nowadays student orientation are only towards Certificate and not really on cognitive and Psychomotor development which has strongly increased the unemployment situation in the country.
Looking at this issue genuinely within the Nigeria context, the low level of technological development has really cause a setback on education and other ways of life Brembeek L.S (1981).
Many town are not enjoying steady power supply or even some country not electrified. It is believed that this will have serious impact on the learning activities of the student now that audio-visual teaching or instructional materials is very good for this age, this may not give the expected result on the teacher work.
The crazy rush for certificate by the society and students endless searching for opportunities everywhere has increase the moral decadence, gross indiscipline and examination malpractices which now make many parents to go for settlement for their children to have success.
The need to address the problem cannot be over stressed. This has become necessary because of the drastic falling in the standard of education and performance of the students.
Apart from providing committed teacher with unique value and methodology, parents need more enlightenment while the students need more encouragement incentives and follow up.
According to Hurlock (2005), the home background and parental attitude to school activities and education generally are some of the strongest and less persistence in determining the child interest and his consequent attitudes to education. Never the less Favant (2004) is of the opinion that children who grows in home where the mind is stimulated developed mentally more than those from homes where there is not incentives for mental growth exercise. It is to be noted that all behavior is a response to some stimulus in the environment.
According to Henderson (1994) research conducted for over three decades have shown that parents family and environment involvement have significantly contributed in various ways to improve students outcome related to learning and school success.
Therefore, this research investigate the likely effect of home, attitude of parent on the academic achievement of students.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Importantly, among them are the effect of home, the students, children of some homes are slow learners, some are fast learners while some are of average. This is attributable to development traits which the children were exposed to and learned.
According to Sander and Epstem (2001) there is the need for comprehensive partnership which should involve the school providing a variety of opportunities for schools families and communities to work together. Therefore it arose, ones interest to know the causes of the effect of the partnership are likely to be.
