GOVERNMENT POLICY IN REDUCING UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN NIGERIA ( 2022)
ABSTRACT
This research project examines government policy in reducing unemployment rate in Nigeria. It traces the history and causes of unemployment to a large extent. It equally assesses the effects of unemployment as it affects Nigeria citizen. Results showed that unemployment causes a lot of damage to an individual and the society at large such as armed robbery, touting, prostitute, drug trafficking just to list a few. The paper contends the unemployment can only be reduced through effective use of government policy.

1.0 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Obviously, there exist today no nation in the world where the problem of unemployment makes no meaning, except for some countries that are creating opportunity to alleviate the suffering of its citizen through the allocation of a particular percentage pf their annual budget towards the payment of the unemployed members of such country.
The history of man would not be complete without the issue of unemployment forming one of the base write up. Prior to the advent of the colonialists, there exist few people on the earth surface and most reside in the rural area with much to do and lots to eat; there was peace and tranquility on the earth with majority of the people being fanners, fishermen and artisan in other various disciplines, while very few engage in trading and business alike in which the issue of unemployment was a non issue for there was more than enough to be engaged in. however, with the advent of the colonialists and introduction of white collar jobs i.e. office job, most in the urban area and heavy industrialization. There was also the introduction of western education to corroborate and educate the masses on how to go about acquiring skills and become viable in the different disciplines and coupled with the advent of crude oil, there came in mass urban migration due to the fat remuneration and the abandonment of farming and all other disciplines became abandoned.
1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The recent modern phenomena such as industrialization, urbanization as well as evolutionary development has consequently provoke sudden unemployment situation in Nigeria. Therefore the effect of unemployment can be looked at from the following perspective.
- Reduction in government revenue
- Rural-urban migration
- Social economic implications
- Political instability
- State of insecurity
Hence the following questions are raised in this study.
1.2 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
- Does academic qualification determine the level of unemployment?
- Does unemployment play a major role in crime rate?
1.3 HYPOTHESIS
H1: There will be significant difference in the academic qualification and the level of unemployment.
Ha: There will be no significant difference in the academic qualification and the level of unemployment.
H1: There is a significant difference in the level of unemployment and crime rates.
Ha: There is no significant difference in the level of unemployment and crime rates.
1.4 METHODOLOGY
This study is determined to check government policy in reducing unemployment rate in Nigeria.
1.5 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF STUDY
This study will be limited to:
- Publications on government economic policy
- Economics textbooks
- Newspapers
1.6 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this study is to find possible means of checking unemployment through the following ways
- To make suggestion on the solution to social problem of unemployment
- To examine the nature of unemployment
- To determine the causes of unemployment
- To create awareness to the people in the society, the effect of unemployment
1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
These research aims at looking critically at the effects of unemployment, ways in which unemployment can be reduced in Nigeria. This research work will be of great importance to the government, as it will proffer possible solutions to the problems of unemployment which will in no small measure help to improve the Nigeria economy.
1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Unemployment: Means a situation whereby labour is idle, instead of being engaged in productive activities
Industrialization: Simply implies the development of industries in a country or an area.
Urbanization: Means to make a rural area, a village etc. more like a town or city by building a lot of new and modern houses, factories etc.
Evolutionary: The process of gradual development
