EVALUATION OF THE USE OF COMPUTER IN LEARNING BIOLOGY IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research project is the evaluation of the use of computer in learning biology in senior secondary schools. The sample used for the study was random sampling technique which is used to select randomly one private and one public school making it to be two schools in Ojo Co-education secondary schools, Lagos state. Senior secondary school one (SS 1) students were used for the study where 30 from private and 30 from public school were picked randomly. A questionnaire was used to collect data from the sample. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested by the researcher using Chi-square statistical analysis which was all rejected. Relevant literatures were also reviewed. The study concluded with a recommendation that the schools should focus more on the use of computer in science class to support internal cognitive processes.

CHAPTER ONE
- BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Teaching and learning process is as old as life itself because as live change every time so also the teaching and learning process changes as well.
In any organization, one of the most important and basic component is the “INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES” (materials). The reason being that, this component has a lot to do with the development and growth of the organization even in the teaching and learning industry. These infrastructural facilities needs more concentration, good maintenance and proper management in order to achieve it’s purpose of being in the very organization; but the reverse in the case in the sense that, both the manager/administrators and the public at large never through of the role and side effect of infrastructural facilities in the talc and chalk enterprise (schools) which has a lot a contribute toward the development and growth of the country even the world at large. The educational bodies as mention above never assume that infrastructural facilities can BUILD OR DESTROY student academically that is it can determine student academic success and failure.
Infrastructural facilities have an important rule to play in the primary school administration. As primary school is said to be the foundation or back-bone of any education. Level which if proper care is not taking to handle this level of educational, it will destroy everything about the education system of that country and development with not occur in that particular country because it is the degree in which a country develop will be determined by that status or standard of education system of the country.
Furthermore, when infrastructural facilities are not in good shape or in order, the atmosphere will not be conducive for learning for both students and the teacher as well. The atmosphere of any learning will occur or not. On the order hand, if infrastructural facilities are constructed and in the right locations, it will definitely affect student academic performance positively.
Though, teaching and learning process is complex and expensive, and the psychologist say “learning is made and effective when all the sense organs are involved” but when infrastructural facilities are not in good shape, it will mar teaching and learning process. The psychologist also says that the ability to learn depend on the child, mental and physical maturity. The attention of a child can be drawn or gained with the kind of constructions and the proper management of the available infrastructural facilities (student would be willing to learn by the kind of materials that are attractive, especially those in the primary school).
However, student academic performance is very important also because improper use or management of these facilities will adversely affect the academic performance of student at the primary school; while good and proper management of material will enhance student academics performance.
To achieve any academic success infrastructural facilities should be available and should be rightly located as proper maintenance.
- STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The educational issues that give rise to this research problem is that, there are many problems that affects the improvement of academic performance of students, which include poor service, bad road and transport network.
There are poor health delivery services in the primary schools, no drugs, lack of equipment, unquality personal and health officer are not accommodatingly employed.
Inadequate water supply leads to the problems of water, gas and chemical in the laboratory, toilet becomes had no drinking water and sanitary condition is bad.
Problem of school building and overcrowded classroom leads to inconvenience, noise making overcrowdness, leakage of the roof, bad classroom arrangement, shortage of chairs and disk problem of bad road and transport network leads to perpetual late-coming of both students and teachers and traffic.
Above all of great concern it’s the inadequacy of infrastructural facilities in our schools and this major problem done has impacted significant on. These problems associated with lack of infrastructural facilities
- Unplanned academic programmes
- Low teacher and pupils morale
- Unconducive environment for learning
- Inadequate instructional materials etc.
- PURPOSE OF STUDY
The purpose of the study is to investigate the management of infrastructural materials and how it affects students’ academic performance.
To find out the availability adequate of infrastructural facilities in the primary school administration and it’s effect.
To examine how infrastructural facilities and the extent at which it contributes to students performance in the primary school.
To establish the relationship between student performance and infrastructural facilities available.
- RESEARCH QUESTIONS
These questions were formed by the researcher during teaching practices exercise to guide in solving the problem.
- What is the impact of infrastructural materials on student academics performance in primary schools?
- What effect does non-intervention of voluntary agencies in the affairs of primary school have on students?
- What impact does proper management of infrastructural facilities has no students academically?
- Are infrastructural materials available in the schools?
- Who should bear the cost of producing infrastructural facilities?
- Is this proper storage of these facilities like data bank?
- RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
Based on the above questions stated, the following hypothesis were formed to test the degree at which infrastructural facilities can determine the academic performance of students at the primary schools
Ho1: There is no significant relation between infrastructural facilities in the academic performance of student in primary school.
Ho2: There is non-intervention of voluntary agencies in the affairs of the primary schools will have significant effect on the academic performance of student in primary school.
Ho3: There are proper use of infrastructural facilities will have significant impact on the academic performance of student in primary school.
Ho4: There is poor and inadequate funding on the academic performance of student in primary school.
Ho5: The source of infrastructural facilities will not have significant influence on primary schools activities.
Ho6: Storage facilities like data bank will have significant on primary school academic.
- SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study is important in that, it will hopefully find or disclose the need for proper management to student academic performance at the primary school.
It will also enlighten both the management and the administration (teacher) and the public at large, on the contribution of infrastructural facilities and how it’s enhance teaching and learning in the primary schools.
It is also hope to encourage and enlighten teacher and students’ teachers of the relationship between infrastructural facilities and student academic performance.
It is also hope that, this study will provides further research on the management of infrastructural facilities and students performance in the teaching and learning process in Nigeria Education system in order to achieve the education aims of the country.
- LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study is focused mainly on the academic performance and the proper use of infrastructural facilities the study will be limited to some selected primary school in Lagos (population) due to some factors, such as fund, time and others extraneous constrains as encountered by the researcher.
- DEFINITION OF TERM
ACADEMIC: This is the act of study in School University which is connected with education that involves a lot of studying and reading than, technical and practical skills.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: This is the degree of success of failure attained by student or pupils in an academic discipline or subject. It shows the content and extent of seriousness of the student in their academic works.
INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES: They are necessary facilities (materials) or basic system and service needed for a country or an organization. There are permanent structures built for the execution of any organization, staffroom, health centre, athletic tracks, counseling room, good post etc.
SURVEY: This is a set of question that you ask a lot of people in order to find out about their opinions or behaviors.
FACILITIES: It is a material, rooms, equipment or services that are provided for a particular purpose.
INFRASTRUCTURE: It is a basic structures, facilities, equipment that a country or an organization needs in order to work properly.
