EVALUATION OF STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF ICT IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF PHYSICS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

This research was carried out to the Evaluation of students perception on the use of ICT in the teaching and learning of physics in senior secondary school. A descriptive research design was used for the study and the instrument for data collection was a questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed and evaluated in order to test the research hypothesis using the simple percentage to analyze the bio-data information and statement, while the hypothesis were tested using the chi-square method to measure the degree of effectiveness (DE).Findings revealed that there is a significant difference between students in private schools and students in public schools on the use of computer in teaching and learning physics. Relevant literature in the area of ICT in teaching and learning was reviewed and the study concluded with a recommendation that government should make sure that every school have enough computers with internet connections on them.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) encompasses the effective use of equipment and programs to access, retrieve, convert, store, organize, manipulate and present data and information (Gay and Blads, 2005). In this age of information and communication technology (ICT), evaluation of students perception have become very  important because,   digital products have become an indispensable part of individuals’ daily lives, learning, work and entertainment. The impact has transformed communication from one-way to multi-dimensional in which users become information participants or providers rather than passive receivers. One urgent task for educational authorities in all nations is to improve students’ learning ability through the utilization of digital methods. However,

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a vital role in the development of any nation. It has been an instrument for achieving social, economic, educational, scientific and technological development. ICT has greatly influenced the educational sector especially on teaching, learning and research. The use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) is not only emphasized in corporative business and the industrial sector, but it is an essential part of education at all levels (Allen, 2011). ICT tools which include computers of different forms, is generally believed to foster cooperative learning, provide information and, through simulation, make complex learning experiences easier to understand.

The use of ICT cannot be ignored either by teachers or by students. This sentiment is stressed by Van der Westhuizen (2004) who points out that, in relation to the use of ICT for learning, technology holds a promise of improved access to information and increased interactivity and communication between teachers and their students. The interest in the study of learning environment has become more prominent since it has been evident that learning outcomes and students’ attitude towards learning were closely linked to the classroom environment. Classroom learning environment refers to a setting or space where teachers and learners interact with each other and use variety of tools and information resources with each other and use variety of tools and information resources in their pursuit of learning activities (Wilson 1996). The nature of classroom environment and psycho-social interaction can make a difference in how the students’ learning and achieve their goals (Mc Robbie, Roth and Lucus 1997).

On the other hand, perception refers the way one think about something and ones’ idea of what it is like, also it is an ability to understand the true nature of a subject especially as it affects our environment. However both teachers and students perception of physics classroom learning environment in different ways hence, learning is a process which produces series of changes in behaviour or it is more or less a change in behaviour that result from activities, training or observation. It is a change in behaviour that confirms learning.

Usage of ICT in schools is so diverse that it is almost impossible to list all possible applications. Taylor (1980, 2003) recognized three roles of computers in a classroom: as tutor, tool, and tutee. Introduction of ICT in physics lessons can raise not only level of knowledge but students attitudes toward the subject as well (Haunsel and Hill, 1989; Kubiatko and Halakova, 2009).  In this case if a science teacher does not use ICT in a classroom damage to the students is limited because they can achieve missing skills with their work in other subjects, or at home (Kuhlemeier and Hemker, 2007).

Hence the need for this study which examines the perception of students in the use of ICT in teaching and learning in secondary schools. This study however will be focusing on the use of ICT in teaching and learning a particular subject which is Physics, in the secondary school level.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The use of technology to support education and learning has helped a lot and improved the lives of so many students by assisting them achieve their set goals and priorities.

However their attitude go a long way in determining whether the ICT and the use of ICT can have a positive outlook in their lives as some show a negative  attitudes towards it. Hence there is the need to examine the attitudes of students to help determine the way forward by informing on the benefits of ICT as well as its shortcomings and how it either affects positively or otherwise.

  • PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the attitude of students towards the use of ICT in teaching and learning a particular subject in the classroom, its focus will however be on secondary school students.

Objectives

  1. To evaluate the attitude of the students in the use of ICT in teaching and learning physics.
  2. To investigate the obstacles facing the use of ICT in teaching and learning of physics.
  3. Highlight the benefits of using ICT in teaching and learning of physics.
  • RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
  1. There is no significant difference between students in private school and student in the public school on the use of computer for teaching and learning of physics in secondary school.
  2. There is no significant difference between male and female student on the obstacles facing the use of computer in teaching and learning in secondary schools
  3. There is no significant difference between physics student and biology students on the benefits accrued to the use of computer in teaching and learning.
  • SIGINIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will enhance and inform the following stakeholders; Teachers, students, school administrator, government etc.

  • To teachers; on how to improves content delivery and reduces workload via the use of ICT tools or equipment
  • To students; it enhance students ability to create autonomous learning, participate in collaborative learning online, self-evaluation and solving of problems through online searching
  • To School administrators; on how to manage records using ICT tools, plan teaching learning that is students centered and enhance quick evaluation
  • To government; on how to plan curriculum that involves ICT facilities and to organize teacher’s orientation programmes where teachers are exposed to the use of ICT facilities.

1.5   SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study however will be focusing on the use of ICT in teaching and learning a particular subject which is Physics, in the secondary school level as ICT is imperative in the improvement of student’s learning ability.

The limitation to the study includes financial constraints, time limit as a result of the time frame allotted for the project not being sufficient as there are other chores to be carried out which result in stress and the problem of precision.
