INTRODUCTION
English language was introduced in Nigeria in the early 19th Century by the British Colonial Administration. Although English language is a foreign language to Nigeria in the sense that it is not indigenous but widely used in Nigeria as the second language. Ever since it was introduced in Nigeria, it has survived many decades and still survives to date. As it assumes a more vital status in Nigeria. Bamgbose (2005) sees English language in Nigeria as one of the leagues of colonial administrator, which has succeeded in eliminating the problems of multiple languages in Nigeria.
English language has played major roles in Nigeria, these could be seen in our education, government business, commerce, mass media, and most of internal and external communication. Above all, English language has played the rate of the languages of political unity. In recent time, English has been rated as the world’s most popular language which is characterized by active communication from one continent to another, especially by indigenous owners of the language. Formal education in Nigeria today is a product of English language. Without English there is the possibility that there may not be anything more than the elementary formal education in Nigeria. Despite the importance of English language, the performance of students over the years has been on a downward trend. Media reports show that the performance of students in written, reading and spoken English is not encouraging. It is therefore the responsibility of the government to provide for the necessary instructional materials to help in the teaching and learning of the language.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Okoye (1982) refers to the performance of individual or candidates who fails to attend a set standard performance in a given evaluation exercise such as tests, examinations of series of continuous assessment.
This means that the standard could be based on a numbers of stipulated subjects and other school activities. A candidate who scores less or below a given standard is regarded as performing poor academically.
The fact that English language is the most important subject in the school curriculum is incontestable. To understand all the subjects effectively, a student needs a firm grasp of the English language. English language is referred to as the key to all other subjects. To be eligible for admission to universities and other higher institution of learning, secondary students must pass English language at credit or distinction level. Since English language is the major process of communication, it is believed that it enhances the students learning in all other subjects. In our society today, students find it very difficult to perform well academically. The statistics of result performance from WAEC (West Africa Examination Council) however reveal that only a fraction of candidates that sit for the examination pass at credit or distinction level annually. The issue of poor performance in English language has become a national disgrace while the situation will continue to generate public debate and outcry, there is need to evaluate our teaching and learning methodology, particularly as it concerns the place of grammar. This is a shameful and pain revelation that calls for attention.
