1.0 INTRODUCTION
- BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Education is the key to creating, applying and spreading new ideas and technologies. It is critical for sustaining growth as it argument the cognitive and other skill which in turn increases labour and productivity. It is the intellectual catalyst of development for a nation and the individual. Primary education is/are recognized globally as the major avenue for promoting mass literacy and consequently, rapid national development. The recognition of the importance of free universal and compulsory primary education has led to the various declaration and action at the national and international level sentence combining strategy & primary in spoken written and reading of English in Ibadan, Nigeria 532. Some conference are also made such as the United Nations General Assembly of 1959, the conference of African Ministers of Education held in Addis Ababa in 1961 and the Jomtien conference in 1990. Among the declaration is the right of child to basic education that is the tree of universal and compulsory education which must be achieved by the year 2015.
The importance of Language in literacy development and the process of acquiring language is continuous and endless. According to (Cooper 2000). Indicate further that children acquire literacy that is reading, writing and spoken of English language when they have a need that is meaningful and real through interactions.
This trend involves whole meaningful supportive and continuous process. Some research findings by Idopo (1981-2005), Ajayi (1981-2005), Ajila (2003-2005), Jiboku (1991) and Ayodele (1983) have also indicate that literacy problem is as a result of the weak foundation at the primary school level. Also Idoyo (2005), Ajayi (2004) and Ajila (2003) Trade the trend of this problem to the primary school where the foundation for learning English language as a means to inculcate permanent literacy and numeracy for effective communicative skill is supposed to be laid.
In most part of the world, English Language is used as the means of communication, mass media, language of commerce and it is also called Lingua franca. In Nigeria, the enviable position attained by the language in virtually all the sphere of the nation is without measure even at the educational level as it is the language of education.
In the Nigerian educational system, English is used as the language of instruction from primary four in the upper classes of primary school through tertiary level. It has become a window through which sound academic excellence can be viewed and attained.
Despite the importance attached to the English language, the primary school level as pupils performance revealed in common entrance examination both in the subject and other subjects which are expressed through the use of English language is still very low. It may be proper to say that the poor performance of students generally in English Language lay on the poor foundation of primary school and could not be unconnected with their inability to write a good composition. The poor performance of student in various examinations especially the West African Examination Council WAEC) is on the increase. According to Adepoju (1999). He indicate that among the factors that is responsible for the student poor performances as identified by the chief examiner report for the year 2000 and some researcher such as Idogo (2005), Ajayi (2004), Ezekiel (1999), Adelabi (1998), Jiboku (1998) and Ayodele (1984) conclude that poor knowledge of the rules of grammar, ignorance of acceptable sentence pattern, inability to construct a complete sentence and lack of teachers’ exposure to modern method of teaching. This had led to many research efforts, which have also directed towards the factors responsible for the conditions and what could be done to rectify this problem.
