CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Leadership as a concept has fascinated man for centuries, but sale in recent years has any kind of theory of leadership emerged.” Coole G. (1990:213). Banjo (1989:40) defines leadership as the ability to influence people so that they will work willingly to achieve the goals of the leader or the group he resents. Thus, while the terms “Leaders” and “Followers” refer persons or actors, “Leadership” and “Followership” are means or process.
Leadership and Followership are essentially group phenomenon and occur in situation calling for interaction between a group of people, the leaders, the problem or task and its possible solution. They are functions of personalities and there can be no leadership without followership.
However, Beach D.S. (1980:47) stated that “leadership consist of interpersonal influence, exercised in a situation and directed, by means of the communication process towards the attainment of a specified goal or goals. He opined that leadership always involves attempts by a person; that is, the leader to affect or influence the behavior of a follower or followers in a particular situation.
An effective leader therefore, is one who can get his followers to act or to do something through the use of any device or means such as persuasion, influence, power, threat or force and appeal legitimate right.
Therefore, the leaders must have the ability to comprehend that human beings have differing motivating forces at varying times and in different situations. He must also have the ability to inspire and persuade and influence, using different methods and also act in a way that will develop a good climate for responding to and arousing motivation.
Consequently, a leader is the symbol of group ideals and an agent of control, people submit to the control of a leader because he is e to discern their underlying and in articulated aspirations and to give them expression. He has a passion for the cause he presents and can crystallize this within men’s hearts.
The leader exercises control over his followers not necessarily by using sanctions but by exhibiting certain traits and qualities which nourish and maintain favourable sentiments e.g. courage, self-sacrifice, hatred of vices, contempt for folly, a sense of national or community destiny and so forth. Besides, all the aforementioned roles not for the observance of the leader alone; they are like the “Biblical Commandments” for the Citizenry. Therefore, followers should not exhibit a “holier than thou” attitude and criticizing those in authority.
On the other hand, student leaders are the mouthpiece of union organizational strength. They are stable organization that have existed for many years, catering for a wide variety of students interests and concerns, though at certain times they have been more relevant to the needs and aspirations of some students than of others. It is to this effect that this research work looked at the effects of leadership role on the academic performance of student leaders in institutions of higher learning.
1.2 Statement of Problems
It is apparent to note that student, unionism and student leadership activities have become an acceptable tradition in our institutions of higher learning. In some occasions, school authorities have fumed that their student leaders are trying to usurp their (school authority) power and functions. They express their regrets that students want to run the affairs of their institutions. And a higher institution cannot be considered as socially complete without student organizations such as student unions, associations, clubs etc. These organizations though informal, complement the activities of formal organization.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this research is to make a critical and systematic study of problems which make student leaders perform poorly in academics. It is therefore the aims/objectives of this research to find out the following problems:
- The problems of student leaders.
- How these problems affect their academic performance.
- Also, suggest ways and means of alleviating these problems and improving the academic performance of our student leaders.
1.4 Significance of the Study
This study has been necessitated and initiated by the apparent notion that students who combine academics with leadership roles in school never perform well in their academics. It was discovered that although many people hold this view, yet there have not been any systematic investigation into the problem. It is to this fact that there is an urgent need to know whether leadership role have such devastating effect on the academic performance of student leaders that this research is embarked upon.
1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study
This research work is concerned with the effects which leadership roles have on academic performance of student leaders in institution of higher learning using Lagos State University (LASU) as a case study.
1.6 Research Questions
This study is designed to address the following research questions:
- Do students have necessary encouragement and support from either parents, government or college authorities before embarking on leadership role?
- Do student leaders have sufficient time for their academics?
- Do student leaders perform better in academics than other students?
- Do students who are exceptionally brilliant perform better in leadership roles than those who are not
1.7 Research Hypotheses
In an attempt to provide answer to the questions stated above, the research put into consideration the following hypotheses:
- There is no significant difference between the student leaders that have necessary encouragement and support from either parents, government or college authorities before embarking on leadership role and those that did not.
- There is no significant difference between the academic performance of student leaders that chose leadership roles and the expense of their academics and those that did not.
- There is no significant difference between the academic performance of the student leaders and the ordinary students.
- There is no significance difference between the performance of students who are exceptionally brilliant in leadership and those who are not.
