EFFECT OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION ON EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
In the 1970s, Nigeria faced unemployment issues, mainly due to the shortage of qualified employees from various firms across the country.
Vocational and technical education is an element of education designed to train students to enter work and commerce, agriculture, e.t.c, that is typically offered at both the secondary and the tertiary level. According to National Policy on Education (NPE), the policy defines vocational education is a part of education that facilitates the development of applied and practical skills and fundamental knowledge in science.
UNESCO (1973) recognized technical and vocational education as an education intended to train skilled workers for work in industry, commerce, and agriculture. It is typically taught at the upper secondary degree.
In some instances, the vocational school provides training to upgrade employed workers. It is geared towards training for the workplace because its participants have the skills to tackle the demands of life in the world of work. Technical and vocational preparation can be thought of as the acquisition of experience in training which culminates in working experience within a work socialized society.
It involves the transmission of knowledge and acquiring skills related to different occupations. It also includes enhancing capabilities that affect the cognitive or psychomotor areas of an individual who is ready to enter the workplace to meet their inherent worth, work goals, and aspirations to ensure that national and local requirements can be fulfilled.
Technical and vocational education is essential to education. It is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and workforce to provide industry and other services needed by society. So, the vocational education curriculum is designed to help prepare professionals with the necessary skills for industry and commerce, agriculture, e.t.c, starting a postsecondary degree. The program includes general education and hands-on training that helps develop the necessary skills for the specific occupation and related theories (Olaitan, 1996). It is not a secret that vocational and technical education (TVE) plays an important part in any nation’s socio-economic expansion and growth. Technical and vocational education is an educational system that helps prepare people to ensure the nation’s sustainable development. It gives the skills needed to cut down on poverty and assists in applying learned knowledge and skills for technological and scientific advancement and the nation’s growth.
In the words of Smith (1991), the term “vocational” in Smith’s education in its broad sense is about the education that allows one to succeed in an effective job. The definition of vocational education is a training program for a job in industrial and trade agriculture, business, and homemaking. Workforce by Okorie (2000) can be described as the total amount of people who are available and ready to serve. Vocational education is a way to prepare the workforce. As per Olaitan (1992), the concept of vocational education is the process that prepares people to be in a position to provide the kind of work we need. This makes vocational education the sine-qua-non to human resource development.
Enebe (2000) discusses the crucial importance that (VTE) can help reduce unemployment and supply skilled labour to support industrialization. Enebe’s (2000) words, “technical education stresses the engineering aspect of vocation education such as electronics, electrical, mechanical and automobile works”. Therefore, both vocational education and technical education are focused on building, among other things, the necessary skills needed to be productive. The world has been aware of the immense transformations that result from advances in technology and the rapid use of technology. Technology and science have become so vital that they have become the replacement for capital, one of society’s most valuable resources. The effectiveness of the VTE system (VTE) in a country is a significant aspect that affects its economic well-being, level of living, growth potential, and security.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
One of the major issues that face Lagos as a whole is the issue of unemployment, which impacts every single person. It affects the education development of Lagos, and solutions to their problems are required. This project is designed to draw attention to the importance of technical and vocational education in education development in Lagos State, particularly in the Ojo Local Government Area. There are numerous challenges worth mentioning, including promises made by successive administrations to pay attention to the need for education in technical and vocational development that have not been realized. Even though the vocational and technical education programs have existed for more than 20 years in Nigeria, the need to facilitate the development of the growth in education through graduation quality is not feasible. The lack of technology-related skills and a rising unemployment rate caused the Federal government officials to create technical education colleges. Furthermore, centres of excellence in a few universities foster creative thinking and the transformation of knowledge via technological processes to create riches and more extensive education bases.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
This research aims to assess the impacts of technical and vocational education on the educational development of Lagos state.
Vocational and technical education aims to provide the young with the necessary tools to grow the economy and education. This research will analyze the efforts already put forth by the government to improve technical and vocational education to boost our economy. It will also explore different vocational courses that could help or be beneficial to the overall advancement of education.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
What abilities and knowledge will society acquire through technical and vocational education?
Can technical and vocational education be an effective tool to help employment growth?
What issues have been identified in technical and vocational educational programs?
RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
HTML0The study demonstrates an analysis of the theory or logic argument and the necessity for this theory to be confirmed. Because of this, these hypotheses are made.
Society has not made any advancement in vocational or technical education.
Technical and vocational education is significantly linked to job growth.
The amount of work that teachers embark upon may not affect vocational or technical education’s growth.
LIMITATION OF STUDY
In this process of collecting facts and information on the effect of vocational and technical education on educational development, the following problems were observed: lack of funds, administration bureaucracy and funding in vocational schools, which could prevent researchers from gathering real information.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THIS STUDY
This project study aims to research the impacts of vocational and technical education on educational development, specifically in the Ojo region in Lagos state. Technical schools must be included within the Ojo, the Local Government Area in Lagos state. This is done to keep the research duration within the study’s scope and the research team’s reach.
