EFFECT OF INDIGENOUS CRAFT ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS (A STUDY OF SOME SELECTED JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENT IN OJO LOCAL GOVERNMENT)

ABSTRACT

This study examined the effect of indigenous craft on Academic Performance of students. A study of some selected Junior Secondary School students in Ojo local government. The study adopted an interpretative phenomenological methodology using a study approach purposive sampling was used to select the respondents. The study revealed that indigenous craft and its educational performance on Junior Secondary school students one of which was the difficulty of getting them. Based on the findings there is no doubt that indigenous craft affect educational performance of student. Each of the hypothesis resized and tested was in line with solution to the area of problem identified.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Indigenous craft is simply defined as an activities that deals with skillful making of a decorative and functional objects by hands and local materials. It further explains that crafts are work of art which are produced skillfully by hand especially in a traditional way.

Indigenous craft is a thriving business in Nigeria. It is easy to start and buyers are easily accessible and readily available..

Some craft that are practiced by artist working alone are sometimes referred to by the vague term “Studio Craft” metal work, wood turning, glass blowing. A key features of craft is that they involves a high degree of “HANDSON”. The craft industry encompasses goods that are handmade by artisans or those skilled in a particular trade. Small business engaged in the craft trade include everything from art galleries to handmade textiles to culinary products often, craft industry entrepreneur operate independently and are not franchised. The industry usually relies on locally sources supplies and community support to maintain a customer base.

Jane C. S. (2002), the paper is illustrative of the cultural wealth of Nigeria in terms of Arts and craft. It provides a descriptive pictures of the various characteristics of the genres in the past and present and in traditional as well as modern Nigerian communities. It is functional within religious, intellectual and socio-economic contexts. Craft offer relief from the monotony and uniformity of a lot of production. They also serve as an occupational therapy for the handicapped and the sick, craft are medium of wealth creations that the government can explore through industrialization to enhance growth and development.

Suraiya Faroqhi (2014) a craft is a form production in which the materials used is vital to the entire creative process and plays an important part in practical function. Craft and art are a means of communicating our emotions in a tangible form for the development of the society and betterment of lives. Indigenous craft is one of the most important in the world with the design of many indigenous objects virtually unchanged for tens of thousands of years.

Clark Alex (2011) Nigeria is one of the African countries widely admired for their artistic heritage. Its artistic culture has an ancient origin dating from thousands of years. Local arts and craft are of different kinds, some of them are practiced in specific cities while others are practiced all over the country. From time immemorial, craftwork has been a source of livelihood for many Nigerians and this has encourage archaeologists to explore more about the ancient Nigerian art and crafts.

Traditional arts are practiced in towns and villages while most of the works of arts designed by crafts people from across the country are sold in major urban markets.

1.2     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

  1. To find out the value of indigenous craft on academic performance of a student.
  2. To find out how indigenous craft can contribute to a student performance academically.
  3. To find out the benefit of indigenous craft in education background.

1.3     RESEARCH QUESTION

  1. Does indigenous craft has any effect on student’s academic performance?
  2. To what extent does indigenous craft contribute to academic performance of a student?
  3. Does indigenous craft affect the students education performance?
  4. Does indigenous craft affect the student educational background?

1.4     RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

  1. There is no significant relationship between indigenous craft and student academic performance.
  2. There is no significant relationship between the benefit of indigenous craft and students academic performance.

1.5     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this study will provide basic or create an awareness to the effects of indigenous craft on academic performance of student. The study will enlighten the society on the effect of indigenous craft on student performance in school by and large. This study will prefer some possible solution associated with the effect of indigenous craft on the student.

Finally, the research work will re-orientate the society especially teachers and parents on the disposition to the illicit effects of indigenous craft on students academic performance.

1.6     SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study is suppose to cover the entire Lagos State but due to time and financial constraint. The study will be limited only to Ojo Local Government Area.

This study will be focused mainly on Junior Secondary School teachers with view of generalizing the opinion of the above mentioned people on the effect of indigenous craft on academic performance of students.
