This research was carried out on the impact of school facilities on academic performance of students in senior secondary schools in Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos state. The collection of data and hypothesis were formulated and tested using the chi-square statistical analysis at 0.5 level of significance and the hypothesis were rejected. Questionnaire was used as instrument for the collection of data questions were used and a total number of 175 questionnaires were randomly administered to the respondents by the researcher. All the questionnaire were collected by the researcher. The population of this study comprised of seven randomly selected secondary schools within Badagry Local Govt. Area. The analysis of the data collected shows that school facilities has great impact on the academic performance of students in senior secondary schools.

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Academic standard have fallen greatly from its previous heritage and prestige.

In the past the real meaning of Education reflected greatly in the output of the gradually in various levels of education which involve training of the mind and influence the display of activities and skills.

In the 60s and 70s ordinary primary six certificate as at then is used to secure[ relevant jobs because of the ability the student who have pass through such stages do display which has made them relevant to the societal activities of their time.

At early 90s academic value started experiencing a gradual degradation in ability and skill of which education is no longer affecting the mind of the people not to talk about their relevance in the society. The situation in Nigeria makes the devaluation point in the academic standard of the people.

As time goes on the academic situation becomes brutal to the extent that National Certificate in Education (NCE) and Ordinary National Diploma (OND) becomes so value less that people see holder of such certificate as semi-illiterate. Presently schools have produced students who cannot practice in their field of profession due to the quality of education they have received.

Considering the disaster that have be fallen the value of education in Nigeria it is then discovered that the foundation of chosen life profession starts from the senior secondary school where-in students fall into their various areas of selected career. In Nigeria the areas of study are majorly divided into three which includes science, art and commercial studies.

Recently, a science student who gained admission into one of the notable school of health technology went for four week training in a Government hospital in Lagos State as part of the requirement for securing the award of the certificate the most disastrous thing is that most of the student who went for such training had never been to a science labouratory in their life.

Considering the above situation the foundation of any major career takes its major foundation from the senior secondary level of education. This situation had caused a lot of damage to academic performance of student in their various examinations. The outcome of senior secondary school certificate examination and general certificate examination had been mass failure due to is these anything but poor education background can be used to subscribe for the facilities needed like textbooks or media system as a means of gaining the knowledge needed by the students. This calls for a proper examination of the positive role, influence of student academic abilities.

The research ought to take effect from the major point where professional field is selected.

Therefore the academic performance student on Nigeria especially among senior secondary student there is absolute need to look into and consider the influence that academic facilities has on these set of student that calls for looking into the impact of school facilities on academic performance of the senior secondary school students of which this research work of one of the senior secondary school in Lagos environment as reference for the research.

1.1  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

There is essential demand toward finding solution to the problem of low performance of students especially in senior secondary school. Due to the situation of academic performance refer in Nigeria the researcher went to examine the causes of the low performance of student in their academic activities.

Though, a lot of things has been considered causing poor performance among students but a major aspect of it is what this work is considering that is the facilities in the school academic achievement of student.

Considering the facilities needed in a school where those thing started from it involve the environment of the school classroom, library, laboratory, computer room and other things in a school set up if this has caused a major problem towards the student performance has there been any effect toward improving on those facilities which are lacking in the school.

Moreover, how has the facilities influence performance of student in there various academic activities and how has unavailable facilities affected them likewise what relevance those facilities has on academic response of the student.

Also, is there any hope for education in this situation and what effort has been on ground toward providing alternative for those crucial facilities and how for can it go in subsidizing the role those facilities are playing in academic life of the student.

How can various senior secondary school secure those facilities if really it has great impact on academic performance and what is the hope of future academic performance in Nigeria if the present academic situation is like this in 21st century. This is done toward discovering the real problem that is causing disgusting performance among senior secondary school academic activities and what is the possible way out of this existing and persisting problem facing academic activities strongly in Nigeria.

  • PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

With the situation of education in Nigeria today and how certificate are losing it value all education will went to strive towards discovering the problem facing student academic life.

Therefore this work went to bring out the relevant of academic facilities in various stages of learning especially in senior secondary school so as to draw a lot of people attention towards looking at the problem of that direction.

Also, this research went to bring out the difficulty the student have been facing in copying with their academic and liability of the teachers to pass across the necessary knowledge to the student due to the lack of facilities which has made the teacher handicap in their profession.

In addition, this work is trying to look at the possible solution towards solving these problems of unavailable facilities for academic and the effect negligence to it will cause the present academic situation and the future standard as well.

Nevertheless, this research aim at providing solution to this particular problem among the senior secondary school with the hope those academic activities will improve from that level to other levels in education.

  • SCOPE AND LIMITATION

Due to the fact that there are a lot of problem facing academic life of students are various issues have contributed to the performance of students base on the fact that likely suggested or presupposed problem are numerous this particular work wants to examine it from the area of equipment in the school which deals with what is generally refers to as facilities.

Moreover the effect of these facilities in academic activities cannot be examined in all achieve a comprehensive dependable and recommendable work this research is focusing on the secondary school alone more over the approach is also limited to the senior section alone.

Notwithstanding, base on the numerous senior secondary school in Nigeria due to the wide range of land and population this work has been limited to Lagos environment alone of which a particular local government has been carefully selected to serve s reference to the work and that has led to Chosen Badagry Local Government as the case study.

Nevertheless, this work is not looking at the administrative problem in any of the school or other issues that may also affect the students performance in their academic but the central focus is the impact that school facilities has on academic and how it has contributed to the academic performance in school where they are available and in school where they are available and in school where they are lacking such facilities.

This has been narrowed down because of the time team resources, access to information analyzing of information on and other academic activities that needed to be attend to during the period of carrying out this work.

Many things narrow down is towards securing on outcome that will be recommendation and comprehensive enough, with a dependable information which can assist in solving one of the academic poor performance problem which in area of school facilities.
