The word “Indiscipline” means different things to different people and educational practitioners. Indiscipline means “the absence of discipline.  It is as old as the existence of school.  In an article titled “Low Morals in Government school Colleges” written in the Daily Times of 2nd February 1998, it denotes that lack of discipline, lack of proper training and upbringing, unruly behaviour, disobedience and disorder.

More often than not the whole society is curious about this act of indiscipline that is so rampant among our school students.  Indiscipline is a nagging problem that we cannot only over rule its impact on our educational standard but also the damage it has done to the society at large.  The degeneration state and persistent fall in the standard of education in Nigeria senior secondary schools call for immediate solution and attention.

Notable among these vices are sexual abuse, alcoholism, disrespect, lateness to school, stealing, lying, destruction of school property, aggressiveness in class, poor attitude to class activities, smoking in the school compound, forgery to examination malpractices, etc. aided and encouraged by school administration, teachers, parents and officials of examination board.

It is therefore against this background that this research is designed to investigate the causes and effects of indiscipline on the performance of students at the senior secondary school with particular reference and emphasis on senior secondary school students in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Statement of the Problem

The need for this study is to improve the performance of students.  It also sought to find out the causes and effects of indiscipline. The academic performance of students today has really been affected by indisciplinary act.  They find it easy in their examinations through mischievous acts.  Most students’ writing senior secondary school certificate examination (SSCE) and University Matriculation Examination (UME) buy their examination questions.  They find a way of bringing the questions to the examination hall with an expert to write the examination for them.

The students are supposed to be exposed to the real concepts and contents of their subject matter but the reverse is the case.  The teachers engage in collecting bribe from the students rather than teaching them the concepts and contents.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study attempts to examine:

  1. How indisciplinary academic performance of students affects them at the senior secondary schools.
  2. The indices for measuring school indiscipline at the senior secondary school level in Amuwo Odofin local government
  • The ways by which students’ academic performance will be improved.
  1. How can teachers and parents influence and affect the academic performance of students.
  2. The likely causes of indiscipline at the senior secondary school level.

Research Questions

  1. Is there any significant relationship between students’ indiscipline and their academic performance?
  2. Is there any significant relationship between students’ attitude and their academic performance?
  • Does the orientation of the students from home affect their academic performance?
  1. What are the causes of indiscipline among students?
