The significance and impact of communication skills on teachers effectiveness in teaching and learning process issue that cannot be overemphasized. It is likely that there is nothing important to the effective functioning of teachers than communication. Almost everything that is done, how lesson content is delivered and been understood by learners involve teachers communicating with students. In spite of its importance, many scored its importance very low and this has resulted into teachers being pedagogically unsound; poor learning and poor performance

This study is embarked upon by the researcher to find out the impact of communication on teachers effectiveness in teaching learning process using some selected secondary school in Yewa south Local government in Ogun State as case study.

In achieving the objectives of this research, several literatures relating to the topic were reviewed. The study reviews the literature on the concept of communication skills, the importance of communication, and barriers to effective communication enhancing teaching effectiveness and how to achieve effective communication skills.

The research design adopted in this study is a ‘Descriptive Survey Design”. Questionnaires were designed and administered among teachers of 10 selected schools in Yewa South Area of Ogun State to obtain information relating to the study.

The data collected were standardized into categories and summarized with the use of tables. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested with the use of chi-square techniques and it was discovered that effective communication skills have a significant effect on teachers’ effectiveness in teaching learning process.

The researcher also made some recommendation on how to improve effective communication skills in order to achieve the best feedback in teaching learning process. The result of this study will provide basis for teachers and concerned professional educational body to work towards improving communication skills in such a way that it will bring effectiveness in teaching learning process.

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Communication is a very vital and basic variable of the process of interaction among individuals. It involves listening, speaking, writing and depicting. It serves a number of purposes. Thus, the importance of the acts of communication cannot be overemphasized. Communication is an essential skill utilized by any teacher. It is important to be a culturally competent communication. It is also important to identify the belief systems of both the teacher and student to spot blocks to communication.

Our communication skills, our facility for handling the language code, affects our ability to encode thought that we have.

It is likely that there is nothing more important to the effectiveness of teachers in teaching learning process than communication.

Almost everything that is done, delivery the subject matter of the lesson, the word choices, which teachers make, he purposes they have for communicating, the meaning they attach to certain words, the choice of receivers, the channels they use for this or that kind of message etc, depends largely on how effective teachers are in using various communication skills.

To this end, the study of communication skills is of -the utmost importance for teachers who wish to be effective at their work and who also determine to improve daily in the teaching learning process.

Based on this, it din be inferred that possessing good communication skill is the life-blood of any teaching learning process.

Conclusively, the impact of communication skills on teachers effectiveness have been highly underscored; which in turn has affected students performance one way or the other, however, it is hoped that the result of this finding will provide a basis far teachers to improve on communication function in order to make them good teachers and not cheaters in disguise.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Communication is an essential skill utilized by any teacher, the school administrator watchword is effective teaching, and this can only be achieved if the teachers concern possesses good communication skills.

In spite of importance of communication, many have rated it low and this has resulted into ineffectiveness of teachers, poor performances of students, wasted money and efforts in the teaching and learning process.

In the light of this, the researcher finds it necessary to carry out study on impact of communication skills on teachers’ effectiveness in teaching and learning process using some selected secondary school in Yewa South Local Government in Ogun State as case study.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The researcher embarked upon this study to find out the impact of communication skills on teachers effectiveness in teaching learning process: the study also seeks to:

  1. Examine the importance of effective communication in the teaching learning process
  2. Examine various communication skills, model and theory needed as inevitable tool in the band of and effective teacher and
  3. To offer suggestion and recommendation on how to improve and enhance teaching effectiveness through the good use of communication skills.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research question will be answered in the course of carrying out this research work.

  1. Does communication skills have any impact on teachers effectiveness?
  2. Is there any link between communication skills and teachers effectiveness in teaching learning process?
  3. Does communication improve teachers effectiveness and student performance during teaching and learning process?
  4. Does communication skills contribute to the reduction of teachers ineffectiveness?

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

In order to fully achieve the purpose of this study, the researcher formulated the following hypothesis for testing

(1)       Ho: Communication skills do not have a significant effect on teachers effectiveness in teaching learning process.

Hi: Communication skills have a significant effect on teachers’ effectiveness in teaching learning process.

(2)       Ho: Communication skills do not have a significant effect on student performance

Hi: Communication skills have a significant effect on student performance.

SCOPE DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study will be focused on communication skills and its impacts on teachers’ effectiveness in teaching learning process in some secondary schools in Yewa South Local Government of Ogun State.

This is done to best confirm the reliability of hypotheses. It is therefore, evident that the research finding may not be suitable to generalize the impact of effective communication, skills on teachers’ effectiveness in some other schools.

The major limitation encountered in this study was the time and financial constraint. The research was carried out alongside university lecture period, which greatly reduced the amount of time that the researcher could have devoted to the study in order to cover a wider place.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The research design adopted in the course of this study is “Descriptive Survey Design”. The basic research instrument used is questionnaire administered to respondents in five (5) selected secondary schools in Yewa South Local government of Ogun State. The questionnaire is made tip of questions that are relevant to the study.

The data collected were standardized into categories and summarized with the use of tables. Percentages and frequencies were made use in presentation of the summaries. Chi-square method was adopted in the testing of the two hypotheses formulated in the course of the study.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this study will provide basis for teachers to work towards improving the communication skill in such a way that it will bring about teachers effectiveness in teaching and learning process.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

COMMUNICATION: The exchange of information between people, e.g. by means of speaking, writing, or using a common system of signs or behaviour.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Basic trait required in nurturing relationship, building a good business and in every aspect of human interactions.

EFFECTIVENESS: Producing the result that is wanted or intended.
