CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Dresses are clothes we wear to protect, beautify or adorn the body, such as dress accessories, hairdos, make-ups, handbags, and shoes. The dress one wears people a lot about the type of person is; it also gives self-confidence; therefore, it is very important to wear the right dress at the right time for posture.

To be dressed depends on the assessment and how an individual is being judged on a particular way of dressing like today’s generations. They dress in order to captivate their opposite sex or be socially relevant. A young girl will put on a mini skirt and open tummy blouses, and the boys will put on old school trousers and a fitted shirt and barb punk hairstyle to attract their opposite sex. They can not be condemned, to them, it is fashion, but this can not be put on by married men and women or older men and women; if it happens, they will be seen as irresponsible men or women.

To all sense of responsibility, the elderly need to be modestly looking and very responsible in dressing because it tells people a lot about the type of person.

There are different modes of dressing, such as

Dress code: – is the unwritten rule of dressing as an aspect of human physical appearance; This has social significance. The dress code has built-in rules or signals indicating the message a person gives, clothing and how it is worn. The message includes indications of the person’s gender, income, occupation and social class, political, ethnic and religious affiliations, attitude toward comfort—fashion, tradition, gender expression, and marital status.

John R Jewitt (1802) described the people of the Pacific Northwest coast as having a complex social structure, including enslaved people, commoners and nobles with a dress code such as loose untailored garments; he was not allowed to cut his hair and had to paint his face and body as a Nootka would is to indicate their social distinction. After his year of stay with them as a captive, the chief decided that he must now be considered one of them and was conform to the custom and ways of dressing.

Fashion Design: This is the applied art design and aesthetics to create natural beauty on clothing accessories influenced by cultural and social attitudes that vary over time. Fashion designers work in several ways in clothing accessories; some work alone as part of a team. They attempt to satisfy consumers’ desire for aesthetically designed clothing because of the time required to bring a garment to market.

Fashion designers attempt to design clothes that are functional and aesthetically modest; they must consider who is likely to wear the garment and the situation in which it will be worn.

Model: – is a person employed to display and promote fashion clothing or other products for advertising or promotional purposes who poses for work or art. Marie Vernet worth was described as the first fashion model in (1852) to her fashion designer husband Charles Frederick’s work.

ASO EBI: – is a Nigerian outfit made from matching fabric to be worn by groups of people to an occasion like a wedding or funeral as a uniform. Wearing certain as Ebi identifies the group of wearers, for instance, at a wedding, all the bride’s friends might wear blue and gold, and the groom’s friend might put on black and pink.

Aso Ebi is a phenomenon seen at Nigerian events whereby groups of people wear similar cloth to indicate their close relationship and solidarity.

The tradition started among the Yoruba tribes it has spread all over Nigeria. Aso Ebi in Yoruba means clothes of the family, but now Aso Ebi is clothes for the selected, not just family but anyone who can afford to buy it.

ASO OKE: – is a hand-loomed cloth woven by the Yoruba people of southwest Nigeria. Aso-oke means top cloth in the English language. Usually woven by men, the fabrics are used to make men’s gowns called Agbada, women’s wrappers called Iro and men’s hats called fila.

There are three types of traditional aso oke weaving techniques among the Yorubas.

(a) Alaari – a rich red aso oke

(b) Sanyan – a brown and usually light brown aso oke

(c) Etu – a dark blue aso oke.

Aso oke fabric is often worn with aran brown velvet with concentric designs.

YORUBA WOMEN GARMENT

When people speak of an aso oke, they usually refer to the traditional Yoruba women’s garment, which consists of four parts.

(1) Buba – Yoruba blouse

(2) Iro – a wrap skirt

(3) Gele – head tie

(4) Iborun or Ipele – a shawl or shoulder sash.

FORMAL WEAR

Nigerians worldwide wear aso-oke fabric for special occasions, including holidays, weddings, funerals and chieftaincy title ceremonies. All followers of the Yoruba religion also wear aso-oke fabrics and hats.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problem facing dress and be dress in fashion is that everyone, including the older men and women, wants to look young again by wearing clothes meant for young girls and boys, like wearing trouser fitted blouse, short skirt and the men wearing old school trousers fitted shirt and barbing punk hairstyle, some do put on low waist trouser. It does not tell well of them since such fashion is for the young one. Older adults feel like competing with young ones instead of correcting them; most women do not put on tie wrappers again; everyone wants to be smart, so they all put on smart wear, like gowns and trousers. This study will investigate what can be done to discourage the older men and women on how to dress properly in the presence of the younger generations so that they can learn good things which they will, in turn, transfer to their generations.

  • PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The study aims to assess the motive behind dressing and reasons for assessment in either a positive or negative manner in the lives of the younger generation and the older adults.
