CHAPTER ONE

1.0   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The father of the child shall be responsible for the maintenance of mother during that period according to usage (Q2:34).

The above Qur’anic quotation is an indication of how God want us to spend on our children. God wants the father to spend on both mother and the children as well. The holy prophet has also said “a father owns three obligations on his children viz: giving him good name, giving him education and marrying for him at the time due”.

The family is the primary unit of the community, the initial cell at the institutional level, and the essential bridge upon which the former generations of the native land cross to give birth to future generations.

In truth, the family is the fundamental social unit through which the new born child is first introduced to the world outside its mother’s womb. As a consequence of this projected environment the child learns the fundamentals of his language, values, norm of behaviour, habits, psychological and social leniencies as well as many factors of his character.

In short, the basic family unit is an environment of cooperation between a man and a woman and the domain of the child’s earliest upbringing.

The family, recording to the Islamic concepts, is not a mere means of satisfying animal instincts, nor is a family’s home merely an abode for sleep. In fact, it represents and educational environment both for spiritual sublimation and intellectual development. It is a place where there is mutual noble sentiments particularly between husband and wife and among the members of the family in general.

The family in Islam is built upon a holy bond and a mutual contract of tranquility, love and kindness between two hearts. The Qur’an 30 verse 21 says

“By another sign He gave you wives from among yourselves, that you might find rest in them, and planted love and kindness in your hearts.  Surely there are signs in this for thinking men. (Suratul Ar-Room )”

Muhammad has said: He who marries preserves one half of his religious commandments, for he must fear Allah regarding the other half. So he who married – means, he who establishes a family and administers its affairs appropriately fulfills one half of Islam’s commandments for he is then in charge of an institution which is the cornerstone of a blissful and social structure.

Islam encourages men to treat their wives well, and gives women the freedom to choose their husbands; It gives woman much of the responsibility for raising the children.

Islam gives fathers and mothers a great deal of responsibility for raising the children. It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allah Ibn ‘Umar heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say; “Each of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock. The leader is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock. The man is the shepherd of his family and he is responsible for his flock. The woman is the shepherd of her husband’s household and is responsible for her flock. The servant is a shepherd of his master’s wealth and is responsible for his flock”. He said, I heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Narrated by al-Bukhari, 853; Muslim, 1829.

Islam paid a great deal of attention to implementing the principle of respect for fathers

Uthman Dan fodio (1978) laid much emphasizes on the father as the head of family to control the affair and monitors the movement of the children, and send them to school.
