CHALLENGES FACING BUSINESS SUBJECT TEACHERS IN A GLOBALIZED ENVIRONMENT (A CASE STUDY OF OJO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE)
ABSTRACT
This favorable globalized environment provides a great opportunities for business subject teaches particularly those located in high growth economic but is also raised a number of challenges facing business subject teachers all over the country. The research work is divided into chapter such as: chapter one: cover the general introduction of the study e.g. background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study etc chapter two: contains literature review, chapter three research methodology and design used chapter four contains data analysis, testing of hypothesis and interpretation chapter five, conclusion, summary and recommendations.
CHAPTER ONE
Background of the study
The term business education may be defined differently by different people in the international world, but it is certain that it is not in anyway different from what it used to be.
Business education by definition so an educational process or content which has its primary aims as the preparation of people for roles in business enterprise either as an entrepreneur/employer or employee.
Although, the method employed could be seen as informal and practical in the traditional education settings.
Since business education aims at the development and production of manpower with the require knowledge, skills and attitude for harnessing other resources and bringing them into co-operative relationship for yielding goods and services to Business Subjects Teachers. It should be well supported totally and be free from challenges that will or may affect the teaching of the subject.
In business subjects, students will be reminded what acceptable business practices are, what is ethical in a society, what is desirable and above all, how social relationships should be regulated not only for business success but also for healthy co-existence among the people in the society. It is clear that business education subjects will be of immense help to business men and women in search of knowledge which will help them carry on their business effectively with minimum capital.
Business education curriculum can be divided into the following subjects, advanced level Business Studies, Principles of Accounts, Certificate Level Commerce, Word Processing, Business Fundamental and Business Communication.
Business on its own can be said to be a commercial industrial, co-operate or professional activity in general as such, it makes contract with human beings and technology hence, it is open to influence from the world of technology and this has brought about the world’s globalization.
Globalization describes an on going process by which regional economics, society and cultures have become integrated through a globe spanning net work of communication and exchange.
It can be defined as a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investments and aided by information technology. This process has effects on the environment, culture, political system, economic development and prosperity and human physical well being in societies around the world.
This effect resulting from globalization is what gave rise to this study as it is necessary to outline the challenges facing business subject teacher sin a globalize environment map out strategies to look after them.
Furthermore, challenges facing business subjects teachers are not sourced only from the teaching and learning of the subjects but also from school administrators, and curriculum planners who fail to provide some basic necessary materials that can develop business subject teachers. For instance, better salary, good infrastructure, better technological equipment that can accelerate teaching and learning process.
Another area of view, is that some business subject teaches are incompetence in preparing students lesson note and change from old method to global world for better skills. How can teachers of business studies develop their professional expertise required of them in the business pedagogy expertise required of them in the business pedagogy?
How can ideas, concepts about good practical be shared among other teacher and students?
Statement of the problem
This project is an attempt to study the challenges confronting business education teachers of the Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos on the rate at which business subject teachers are being challenging in the global environment.
In recent years, due to the world technological advancement that has resulted to world globalization, most field of life has been influenced thereby efforts to adopt to the modern technologies are strived too.
The field of business and education are not left out of the influences made by modern technologies as a result challenges are faced by the business subject teachers in the adoption to a globalize environment.
Purpose of the study
The purpose of this research includes
- To outline the effects of globalization in the business and education sector.
- To outline the impact of globalization on the business subject teachers
- To find out the challenges facing the business subject teachers in a globalize environment
- To find out if teachers attitude contributed to the challenges facing business subject teachers in a globalize environment.
Research questions
- What are the effects of globalization on the business and education sectors?
- What impact has globalization made on the part of the business subject teachers?
- What are the challenges faced by the business subject teachers in a globalize environment?
- What strategies can be mapped out for the challenges faced by the business subject teachers in a globalized environment.
Significance of the study
- Findings from this research would help outlines the effects of globalization on the business and education sector.
- It will also help to find out what impact globalization has made on the business subject teachers.
- Findings of the research will likewise outlines the challenges faced by the business subject teachers in a globalize environment
- It will help map out strategies that would provides solution to the challenges faced by the business subjects teachers in a globalized environment.
- Finally, this study will be of immense benefit to teacher, students, institutions, business practitioners and employees in many ways. Many business educational institutions and especially the state education commission will find the result of the study useful to guide in helping business subjects teachers with the provision of all they need in carrying out their task efficiently.
To furthers the objectives of this study, the following hypotheses will be tested.
Hypothesis one
Ho: There is no significant relationship between the teachers level of information technology background and achievement of teaching in business studies.
Ha: There is significant relationship between the teachers level of information technology background and achievement of teaching in business studies.
Hypothesis two
Ho: There is no significant relationship between teachers use of instructional materials and their students academic performance in business studies.
Ha: There is significant relationship between teachers use of instructional materials and their students academic performance in business studies.
Hypothesis three
Ho: There is no significant relationship between the teacher level of qualification and adaptation to the teaching of business studies in a globalize environment.
Ha: There is significant relationship between the teachers level of qualification and, adaptation to the teaching of business studies in a globalized environment
Hypothesis four
Ho: There is no significant relationship between globalization and method of teaching business studies.
Ha: There is significant relationship between globalization and method of teaching business studies.
The scope and delimitation of the study
This research study focused mainly on the challenges of business education teachers in the teaching of business subject. The scope of the study is limited to Ojo Local Government Area, Lagos with the intention of challenges confronting business education teachers in the globalize environment.
The area of focus selected in order to cover the research and ensures precision in drawing a logical conclusion.
Furthermore, Ojo Local Government Area was chosen purposely because of a good representation of the degree of business related problem.
Definition of terms
The following terms are used in the course of this research study.
Global: This has to do with issues (Alexander, WJ Globalization of Business Education 2004).
Globalization: Process of interaction and integration among the people companies, government of different nations a process of international trade and investment and aided by information technology.
Environment: By definition is the physical condition that something exists in which affect the behaviour and development of it (Advance learning 17th Edition)
Business education: This is the sum total of the knowledge, skill and attitude that are required for successfully promoting and administrating business enterprise. (Business education at risk, WWW arcs eddo deck 200).
Teacher: A teacher is one who teach or instructs other to do something.
Information communication technology (ICT): It means the use of computer system and communication equipment information process (Charles Karee Aye Delta State University 2001).
