CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCE OF TEENAGE PREGNANCY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOL IN ALIMOSHO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE
ABSTRACT
This piece of research is focused on the Causes and Consequences of Teenage pregnancy among Secondary School students in some selected secondary schools in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos state.
There are lot of issues addressed on causes and consequences of teenage pregnancy. These include Rape, Lack of guidance from elders, Lack of self control.
In the process of carrying out the research questionnaires were administered in five different schools in Alimosho Local Government Area. Also, interview was carried out in the five selected schools.
However, the findings showed that to a great extend, the causes and consequences of teenage pregnancy which include watching sex films, parents and teachers not teaching the students about sexuality education.
The principal, teachers and the government should ensure that the students were taught sexuality education in schools and at homes.

INTRODUCTION
- BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
The incidence of teenage pregnancy has become a global issue as a result of its consequences on population health, growth and development. It is a world wide concern since the Cairo International Conferences on population and development held in 1994 raised it as an issue among others.
Teenagers are children who fall within the chronological age of twelve to Nineteen years Teen, of course, are a period when a child begins to develop secondary sexual characteristics, starts to assume higher social responsibilities and to express sexual feeling and desires. This is a delicate period in the life of the children for all physical changes have great impacts on the psychological functioning of the child. The studies have revealed that more than fifteen million girls of 15 to 19 years (due to high rate of sexual activities among the unmarried teenagers) are exposed to serious health risk factors.
Teenage pregnancy has become a momental, social as well as education problem ravaging the educational system. Every year hundreds of teenage secondary schools students get pregnant at enormous costs to themselves their children and the society at large and their families. Most of these pregnancies are unintended and occur mostly at the adolescent stage of life when the female had reached puberty.
Ordinarily these pregnancies may not be a source of concern, it occur sparingly but these days the rate of occurrence, frightening and one will begin to wonder what could be responsible, one does not need to look for though while the facts are clear. The issues of teenage pregnancy are complicated by our conflicting attitudes and behaviors. Today the media both print and electronic are filled with talk of sex. Sex is used to sell almost everything in the name of advertising products (household and industrial). Young girls are portrayed as sex objects and adolescents today are growing up in a culture in which peer, television and motion pictures, music and magazines often transmit either covert or event messages that unmarried sexual relationship (especially those involving teenagers) are common, accepted and at expected behaviors. Today, young girls below 15 years of age are already sexually actives. They have become so (sex conscious) that it has become second nature neglecting the dangers and problems associated with early sex one of which is teen pregnancy, which is the focus of this study.
REASONS
- Because we find out that from Junior School they (female student) were already deeply engrossed in a long term relationship that will tarnish their life.
- These teens become mothers while they are still “babies” themselves and are supposed to be under the care of their mothers. They gave birth to babies they cannot cater for economically and physically.
- Lack of self control from the female students and persuasion from their opposite sex.
- Poverty of parents and guardians further encourages teenage pregnancy.
Many of the pregnant female children in the society today are from poor homes who cannot afford the basic needs of life like food and shelter. Wealthy males in the society thus easily lure such children into premature sexual intercourse.
HOW IS IT RAMPANT IN OUR SOCIETY?
- Our teenage activities such as drinking, smoking and taking drugs that have negative impact on them.
- Our teenager has been exposed to night clubs and to use that to fend themselves. They take prostitution as their occupations.
- Some teenagers have frustrated by their parent and guardians and their poor condition.
- In these selected schools, it has belten itself of the issue in the society within these selected schools, some female students are involved in and dandestines relationship with male teacher because of the promise of marks, money and other benefits by such male teachers.
- Peer influences go a long way in influencing the act. Their friends lured many of female students in the society today into the relationship with men.

- STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
It is a known fact in our present day society that teenage pregnancy is so rampant particularly among the teenagers in our secondary school in Lagos state. This ugly development could not be arrested by the teachers and parents in the school.
This however could be associated with the behaviors of the parents toward their children which are female, to be loose, also not educating them on sex education.
This research is therefore set to assess the causes and consequences of teenage pregnancy among some selected secondary school students in Alimosho Local government in Lagos state as a study.
- PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
- The purpose of this study is to find out the various causes and consequences of teenage pregnancy among secondary school students in some selected secondary schools in Alimosho Local government area of Lagos
- To look at what led to the causes of teenage pregnancy.
- To identify the consequences of teenage pregnancy.
- SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of the study lies on the causes and consequences of teenage in secondary school however, the significances of the study include:
- The study will dive into the consequences of teenage pregnancy in the secondary schools.
- The study will explore into the cause of teenage pregnancy in the secondary schools.
- It will also help student to develop interest in finding a solution and make recommendations and suggestion to the causes and consequences of teenage pregnancies in secondary schools.
- The study will also be of help to both local, state and federal government levels in proving and promoting how teenage will not get early pregnancy while still in secondary schools.

- How do we avoid teenage pregnancy?
- What are the government’s attitudes in providing solution to teenage pregnancies?

- HYPOTHESIS
- there will be no significant difference in the causes of teenage pregnancy among some selected secondary school student.
- There will be significant difference in the number of teenage pregnancy among secondary school female student from rich home background and the influence of the environment on the rate of its occurrence.
- There will be no significant difference between the consequences of teenage pregnancy among secondary school female student and the reason responsible for the rate of its occurrence
- SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study will cover five secondary schools in Alimosho Local government education district of Lagos state. The study will cover the teachers in the selected secondary schools, few parents contracted and school authorities.
- LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study of the research will be limited to five (5) selected schools namely: Egan Grammar School Alimosho, Igando Grammar School Alimosho, Oluwafunmi Senior School Alimosho, Ikotun Senior High School, Ijegun Grammar School Alimosho. Due to funds, time factor and personnel with which to carry out the study.
- DEFINITION OF TERMS
Operational definition of terms used in this study is as follow:
TEENAGER: The word teenager is synonymous to the word adolescences. Teenager as an unstable time during which a child needs structure as well as opportunities to become more independent.
ADOLESCENT: is a period in which the growing child experiences considerable acceleration in growth
TEENAGE PREGNANCIES: can be described as the pregnancy that occurs to female students between the ages of 13-19 years.
PUBERTY: is the stage of adolescence when the secondary sex organ begins to develop and the female can sexually reproduce
