ATTITUDE OF MUSLIM PARENTS TOWARDS THE STUDY OF ARABIC LANGUAGE IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS (A STUDY OF FIVE SCHOOLS IN OJO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA LAGOS STATE)
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research study is to examine the attitude of Muslim parents towards the study of Arabic language in junior secondary schools. Five research questions and five hypotheses were used for the study. Simple percentage were used to analyses the demographic data while inferential statistics of chi-squares (X2) was used in testing the research hypotheses. Research finding showed that attitude of Muslim parents towards the study of Arabic language has negative effects on their academic performance on Arabic language, which in one of the international language in the world. To this end, the researcher recommended that parents should be given adequate orientation on the importance and benefits of Arabic language to the family, the nation and the world at large. The government should attach more interest to the study of Arabic language because it is the medium which Nigeria history recorded.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
It is unequivocal that Arabic is one of the semantic language despite of being the language use in writing the Qur’an, every individual spends much time in learning English language at the expense of Arabic such that English language in given priority than Arabic language.
Abdul (1986) defines Arabic as distinctive academic discipline which consist of studies of the Arabic language literature and culture of the people who speaks it as lingual franca, Arabic was also defined according to Al-Ilori as a high standard language with a great civilization spoken by a large community in Africa and Asian, the population of which could not be less than hundred million
Mohammed et al (1997) opine that the Arabic language today is the medium of daily expression to nearly seven million people who are native speakers. It is equally a renowned lingual franca to well over 1.5 billion faithful Muslims across the globe for religion practice it has reached the position of a prominent international language due mainly to the universal nature of Islam.
Malik (1999) in his inaugural lecture bears witness that the standard of the students who learn Arabic in secondary school is very low. The reason for this is that most of those students have no previous knowledge of Arabic before their admission to secondary school, as a result of non-teaching of Arabic in their primary school, hence these pupils know absolutely nothing about Arabic.
Through Arabic language like another course is being offered in higher institution it was realized that most students do not put in for the course in the university and even those admitted for it, always turn down the admission and prefer staying at home rather than studying the course.
Uthman (2002) observes that this had invariably affected the number of those that study the course and subsequently to become Arabic language teaches in the schools.
However, it in pathetic to note that we are all aware of the great potentialities of Arabic in Nigeria as a language of diplomacy, international relation, national historical studies, literacy as well as the language of the shuwa Arabs, a Tribe in Borno state of Nigeria. It has not done much to help in the development of Arabic. In other words, religion stigma attached to Arabic as language of Islam Has caused great problem in the process of learning Arabic and has derived in the extra religion value which would have been helpful in Nigeria education.
The need to shed light on the reality about language in Nigeria derives its impetus from the hostile posture of some people in Arabic and the negative impact such hospitality has a language and it country. The hospitality which cuts across ethnic and religion boundaries is discovered to be the result of ignorance and misconception people have about the language Rahman I..L. (2006).
The proper understanding of Arabic as a language on which Arabic language is directly focused, requires a good knowledge of Arabic.
This work will briefly talk about attitude of Muslim parents towards the study of Arabic language in junior secondary school in Lagos state.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Arabic language is very essential in Nigeria because it is the language of the Quran because the Quran is being written in Arabic language and it is the language in which the Quran was revered to prophet Muhammad (SAW).
In Nigeria Arabic language as been facing server problem in terms of the negative attitude of the parent’s and some of the facilities not provided for the growth of the language.
This research work attempt to find probably remedy in the following problems.
- Why some Muslim parents prefer their children studying another language rather than Arabic?
- Do the children have zeal for Arabic language?
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
This study will examine the attitude of some Muslim parents towards the study of Arabic language in our country.
This study shall examine the down fall of Arabic language and proffer some possible solution with the aim of address such attitude and recognize the positive effect Arabic language on the students.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This research work will motive the parents and general public to have positive feeling towards the study of Arabic language in secondary school.
It will also assist the policy maker to give credence to Arabic education.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of the study is to carry out an examine of the importance of Arabic language and the attitude of parents towards Arabic language in five selected junior secondary school in Ojo local government area of Lagos state.

1.6 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This research is limited to five selected junior secondary school in ojo local government area of Lagos state it shall be limited to Muslim parents.

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Arabic: Abdul (1986;11) defines Arabic as distinctive academic discipline which consist of the Arabic language and literature and culture of the people who speaks it a lingual franca the new encyclopedia Britannica(2007, 105) also defines as the language of Quran.
Arabic education: it is a process of helping the students and teacher to acquire spoken and written comprehension in the Arabic language (orisabi 2007).
Education: A process of teaching, training and learning especially in school or colleges to improve knowledge and develop skill (Horn by A.S 2016).
Attitude: A feeling or opinion about something or someone or a way of behaving that is caused by this of its often very difficult to change people attitude (Cambridge dictionary 2005; 17)
Language: the system of words or signs that people use to express thought and feeling to each other ( Mariann Webster 1996;30).
