CHAPTER ONE

  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Academic performance and moral excellence have sometimes been treated as separate skills that are not related in anyway. However, with the integer-rated approach to teaching and learning.  It was found out that those two skills are actually closely related and could most often be regarded as one unified skills with academic excellence and vice versa.

Pupils/children moral conduct in pre-primary school and their academic performance have for sometimes been treated, as separate skills that are not related in anyways.

However, with the integrative approach to teaching and learning, it was found out that these two skills are actually closely related and could mostly be regarded as one unified skill with academic  achievement acting as one stimulant for moral excellence and vice versa.

The free dictionary define moral as the teaching or exhibiting goodness or correctness of character and behavior and also conforming to standards of what is right or just in behavior, virtuous.

Sila (2002) argued that ‘moral conduct is the principle of human behavior that promotes orderly and peaceful existence in a community.

Rules of moral conduct are to be found in every religion, usually they compromise list of actions from which to abstain, implying that any actions not covered by the prohibitions and the permissible.

According to Oladipo (2002) ‘pre-primary education is the first stage of compulsory education.

Moral conduct and academic performance are very essential to the public development, since the pupils has to understand what they learn in the school so as to be able to communicate, read and write effectively etc. The two skills serve several purpose and functions which include personal, social and academic.

In addition, this skills meres the pupils awareness and understanding of social problems, enable them to form a moral code for themselves and to encourage them to try to transform their lives to face the future realities and academic challenges but how well do our pupils perform in moral conduct perhaps a look at the moral conduct of both of the private and public pre-primary schools.

Cheney (2002) argued that “academic performance is not an activity to be pursued in isolation from any skill area” pupils go to preprimary school in other to develop communication skill, read write, observe etc. These could be the goal of pupils at this level. However, as the pupil approaches the teachers (who happen to be the source of learning) such pupil is expected to be of good moral behavior and conduct in order to get the best from the teacher.

Academic performance are very essential to the people development, since pupils has to understand what the teacher will teach, to be able to communicate, read and write effectively, the two skills have several purposes and functions, which include personal/social and academic.
